Mountain Ash?
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 12:32 GMT (UK) »
I have a photograph which I think was taken in the early 1930's.
I think it was taken in Mountain Ash.
Can anyone verify this, please?

Hi have just seen the photo you posted.  Do you know who the family is in the picture or any of their names?

Thank you for your reply.

I only know that the lady in the middle is Alice Tegwen Powell who married my Birmingham born Grand Uncle Norman Horton in Pontypridd in 1932. The boy who the other lady has her arm around is my Father, Eric Horton, who would become "Aunt Teg's" nephew when she married.

At the time of the 1911 census, the family lived at 3 Ivor Street, Mountain Ash, but this photo must have been taken some 20 or more years later, since my Father was born in 1926, so they might well have moved since then.

I hope this helps, and thank you very much for your interest.

Unfortunately, the names you have given ring no bells with me.  As some of my family history research has given me connections with Mountain Ash, I thought I may have been able to help.  Some time ago I chanced on a website that had old photos of Mountain Ash but I can't remember what it was called.  I but seem to remember a mention of Aberdare.  I think Mountain Ash is in the Rhondda Cynon Taff area (of course you may know this already), so it may be worth you Googling these areas for information.  If you could find an old photo of a similar date you could compare the background.  Anyway, hope you find what you're looking for.

You definitely need someone with local knowledge for this one :)

I lived for several years in Cilfynydd (Pontypridd) and in Maerdy (also Rhondda Cynon Taff) and I travelled through lots of the welsh valleys on the way to various weekly markets, and this picture could have been taken in almost any of the mining villages and towns anywhere in South Wales.

If those "hills" in the background are actually slag heaps, then even the profile may have now changed, as many slag heaps were reduced in size, after the tragedy at Aberfan in 1966

Thank you.
I'm old enough to remember the Aberfan tragedy, Aberfan is quite close to Mountain Ash isn't it?
Anyway, it looks as though I might never know who all these people are, or indeed where they are.
It's always hard to accept hitting a "brick wall", but I think I'll have to!
thanks again
