McLeod Family
« on: Friday 26 March 10 10:26 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my family. My Grandfather was born at Lewiston Urquart Inverness 1891.His father was William and Mother Bella. My Grandfather immigrated to New Zealand 1926 - A Census shows that he had a number of brothers and a sister.  About 25 years ago my Father and his brother recieved a letter from ( my father said it was the sheriff of ) Drumnadrochit stating that as NOK they had been left property in a will. My father does not now have the letter. My Father and his Brother declined it and said their shares were to go to family back in Scotland. My father turns 90 this year and he says that he has family in Scotland but does not know the address's. I am making my first ever visit to Scotland in July and would like to try to find them. So where do I start? In anticipation of a positive outcome...

hi Don

welcome to rootschat  :)

rootschat has a policy of not talking about anyone who is still living so i'm not
sure how much help we can be
however.......
if you don't have it already tracing the family to 1901 shouldn't be hard and
would give you a starting point for your research
what census did you find your family on ?
can you give further details of your grandfather's parents/siblings ?

Hi EV
Thank you for the contact.
I have found my Grandfather on the 1901 Census with his family. and have details - marriage certs etc of my G and GG Grandparents.
My Grandfather died in NZ in 1959 - He was named Alexander. The siblings were James, Ann,John,Alexander,William,Donald ( Whom I am named after )
I will have first cousins and relatives "living" with a connection to the area of Urquart and Inverness through those siblings mentioned. In trying to find the local council ( which has eluded me ) that I expect will have details of landowners and possibly more up to date info I found this site.  Any information on how YOU or members would go about tracing the LIVING would be greatly appreciated.

You could try http://www.scotlandsgreateststory.bravehost.com/ there is a fee but they do trace living relatives.

Hi Don

The Council that covers the area you are looking for is Highland Council.  You can find them at http://www.highland.gov.uk/ also you could try http://www.ambaile.org.uk which has a lot of local history.  Good luck with your search.
