COMPLETED Compare and possible date please
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 05:21 GMT (UK) »
Is it the same girl in each photo? Opinions please :)

Unfortunately I don't have the back of the photos to scan, but would like a rough date if possible. I have no idea who this family is but notice the black arm band on the man and looks like a dark sash around baby. Would someone have a photo like this taken for the death of a baby niece or cousin?

Hoping for a date so I can try and find the family in a census. I'll just look for  different surnames I have in my research.

Thanks
Lois (Australia)

Hi xin....thanks for your opinion on the girl.
I think (or hope) this baby is alive :) I can't work out if it's a boy or girl.

Hi Lois,

Just a quick response for now, got to get the tea on!  ;D
I'd put money on that being the same girl in both pictures.
I'm not sure I can see a black armband on the man - there's a strip of his sleeve that does look darker, but the folds of the fabric there follow the folds of the sleeve exactly which wouldn't be the case if it was a separate band on top of the sleeve.

I will pop back later (if I remember) and see if I can hazard a guess at the date for you - and hopefully Jim, China and others will be along to help you with that too  :)

Cheers
Prue

Hi Prue

I think you might be right about the dark colour on the sleeve. I looked at the higher density scan I did and on the fold of the elbow it looks like it is lighter. If it was an arm band I would think it would be higher up the arm. Thanks for your opinions.

Would you (or anyone)  have a guess as to the age of the children and whether the baby is a boy or girl please. ;D

Thanks

Lois

Hello Lois
2 nice pictures with the 1st. being the most recent. You'll notice in this the girl is wearing a new type bustle,a fashion that returned mid 1880's but lasted only a few years. Her skirt length would be to her calf indicating that she's not a girl but not yet a woman either as does her long hair. The ruching at the front of her skirt & pleating covering her bustle was a typical fashion mid - late 1880's & differs from her mother's were the skirt is drawn from the front & brought up & over her's.In this the girl has the shorter skirt of a girl so probably no older than 13/14 so a date of early - mid for this one & agree same girl.

Definitely same girl, about 12 in the first picture.

The parents in the group photo look around 40-ish to me, so I wonder if they got married later than one would expect, and had a family late ... as the children look about 10 (the girl), 7/8 (the boy) and the baby ... maybe a year old ?

And its hard to judge gender of babies as they all wore dresses until they were 'breeked' ... i.e. had their first trousers when they were 'dry' !

Definitely all alive and not a PM photo !

Hi Jim and Lydart

Thanks so much for your input. I found your posts very interesting and I need to do a lot more thinking about this family. I think I should be looking back another generation. I'll have to see if anyone lived in the Swindon area.

I will try the 1881 census and see if I can find anyone. The baby might not have been born then, but I'll see what I can find.

Xin just saw your post, yes I'm glad too

Regards,

Lois
