Llanrwst Parish Registers
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 09:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Can anyone help, I'm trying to find my Great grand fathers birth/baptism. I think I have managed to track him down to living in Denbigh Street, Llanwrst in 1891.

At the same address is Mary E Edwards - Head - age 30 born in Maenan
Robert J Newton - Son - age 9 also born Maenan  (G Grandfather)
Dora M Savin - Daughter - age 4 again born in Maenan

I am hitting a wall as the next time I find him he has changed his name!  Apparently this was to continue as when my Grandfather was born he went under the name of Robert Newton Elias, then changed it again when he moved to Pontypridd, where he reverted back to Robert Newton but with a middle name of Elias.

He married my Great grand mother Mary Catherine Jones in Merthyr in 1906 under the name of Robert Elias

He married a Violet Thomas in Ponty under the name of Robert Elias Newton in 1918

I found him on the 1911 Census under the name of Robert Elias living in Pontypridd with a Dora Davis both with a birthplace of Llanwrst, I am assuming this is the sister, now married??

Cannot find either on 1901 census. :-\

I would be so grateful if anyone can help

Hello Shaz101963,

This is an intriguing one for sure.

I tried to see if I could find anything on Freereg but no luck.

I looked on FreeBMD and think this is his birth registration:

Llanrwst Registration District December quarter 1881 Robert James Edwards Vol 11b Page 333.

There is nothing for him under Newton, or Elias on BMD.

In the 1881, Mary Edwards is living at The Stag Inn, Llangerniew as a servant with the Rogers family. She has no children then and is single it appears.

I cannot find anything for Dora Savin.

My view is that you should get that birth certificate to see what it shows.

I think that Maenan comes under Eglwysbach which is in Caernarfon county. See the entry on Genuki for Maenan.

Looks like they may well be ROBERTS in 1901 living in Llanrwst???

Mary E Roberts     39
Robert J Roberts    19
Dora Mary Roberts    13

RG13; Piece: 5242; Folio: 6; Page: 4.

Dora is quite an unusual name and to find a Dora M living with mother Mary E, and brother Robert J all of the correct age..... it's got to be the right family, hasn't it?

Lee.

Probably no connection at all,  but Elias is fairly uncommon as a surname,  and it does have a certain resonance in the Llanrwst area . . .  Big genealogical table in Griffith's Pedigrees, p.253.  (Mrs Pierce of Leamington,  one of these Eliases,  had a collection of old papers credited by Griffith as one of his sources.)

A sort-of online version is up on RootsWeb,  for access to which click here -- and perhaps worth going back a further generation via the onward link to the father there,  for two cousin-lines.

Hello again,

The Roberts name in Llanwrst in the 1901 could be after the marriage of a Mary Ellen Edwards in Llanwrst Registration District March quarter 1895, the entry shows Mary Ellen Edwards and Robert Roberts.

There are a couple of possible birth registrations for Mary Ellen Edwards in the September quarter of 1862, one in Caernarvon RD and the other in Festiniog RD.

Searches of the 1861 and 1871 census returns reveal not that many families with the name of Edwards living in Maenan. I cannot find a Mary Ellen Edwards there but there is an Ellen Edwards with the right age, 10, in the 1871.
