John Muirhead
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 22:30 GMT (UK) »
I need help to find the correct birthdate and names of parents of John Muirhead born abt 1834 [?] Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
I am a Kiwi family researcher who is finding it a bit difficult to find info from a distance!
I have a print out of 1861 Census but the writing isn't very clear and I can't make out his occupation- ooh! problems!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.

The OPR birth indexes on SP show only one John Muirhead born in Hamilton in 1850 to William Muirhead and Agness (sic) Jackson.

The 1861 Scottish census likewise shows only one John Muirhead, birthplace Hamilton. The household (living at 50 Surrey St, Govan, Glasgow) is as follows:

William Muirhead, age 50, carter, birthplace Kilbride, Lanarkshire
Agnes Muirhead, age 38, wife, birthplace Hamilton
William, age 16, son, victualler, birthplace Hamilton
Mary, age 14, daughter, dressmaker, birthplace Hamilton
Thomas, age 13, son, shop boy, birthplace Hamilton
John, age 11, son, scholar, birthplace Hamilton
Agnes, age 8, daughter, scholar, birthplace New Kilpatrick, Dumbarton
Margaret, age 6, daughter, birthplace New Kilpatrick, Dumbarton
George, age 4, son, birthplace New Kilpatrick, Dumbarton

Cheers,

Rodeo

Hi Rodeo,
Thank you so much for your reply, unfortunately I don't think this john muirhead is my relative.
The only info I have is from his marriage cert to my ggrandmother in 1877 Dunedin NZ and his age of 43 years, occupation, laborer, and on my granmother's birth cert has his age at 48yrs  place of birth, Hamilton Lanarkshire, Scotland. So this would make his birth yr as 1834 or there abouts.

The census I manage to get but can not read that well is dated 07/04/1861 Muirhead, John [ census 1861/01 103/01 007]
Have used my very BIG magnifying class and all i can make is..
30  Benkirk st?  or  -----kirk st.. John Muirhead..26yrs..occp..laborer?..unclear..born Scotland.. wife..Margaret.....24yrs..Scotland.. next name unknown...niece? 7yrs..scholar.

This john muirhead's birth would coincide with my chappie and is possible he may have been married before he came to NZ and there may not have been any children?

Once again thank you for your help.  Roselad

Hi Roselad

I just had a look at the 1861 census extract you have, which cites Ireland as the place of birth of John Muirhead, Margaret Muirhead (his wife), and Sarah Jane Moir (his niece). The address is 7 Garnkirk St, Barony, Glasgow. John's occupation is labourer, bottleworks.

It would seem from the above that this is not your John Muirhead.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Hi Rodeo,
Sorry i don't know if he even had siblings, haven't  even been able to find out when he arrived here in NZ.
I'm going to try for a death cert as he died aged 57, in 1891 at Portobello, Otago, hoping it might throw up some more info.

Hi Roselad

The Index to Outward Passengers to Interstate, UK, NZ and Foreign Ports 1852-1901 in the archives of the Public Record Office Victoria contains the record of a John Muirhead, age 28, departing Victoria, Australia for Otago, New Zealand in September 1861 on the ship Alice Vemrard. The link below will take you to the search page. If you think this may be your John Muirhead, you can order a transcript from the PROV archives.

Hopefully, the death certificate will provide some useful information, as you say.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Thank you so much you are brillant, I'm not the best at researching, still learning.
I have looked  at the site and it's worth giving it a go, it's a possibility it may be my man.
Once again thank you.
