research in person in San Francisco where?
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 23:42 GMT (UK) »
I will have one day in San Francisco soon, between flights, to do some hands on research. Can anyone give me suggestions where to find material that is not online? I am researching three people. Unfortunately, none of them had children while in California.

Here are some particular things I'm looking for:

1. a marriage certificate from August 1887 (Los Angeles).

2. local directories for San Francisco 1903-1940s showing residential addresses.

3. any records of professional associations for journalists in San Francisco c 1903-1940.

4. a death date for a SMITH in San Francisco about 1930s - 1940s.

5. any other general San Francisco material that can be searched by name.

6. any historical information about newspapers in San Francisco 1903-1940.

So far I've got on my list of places to go NARA at San Bruno near the airport, and the California Historical Society. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

LizO:

Depending upon how much time you have between flights, you might not be able to research in San Francisco.  (You might spend too much time traveling to and from the airport.)

There is an LDS location that my father used and because they have local records, that might be one choice.  I will find it's location (it is in or near San Bruno).

I will have a look around to get additional ideas.

In the meantime, this might be helpful:

The Family History Centre is located:
975 Sneath Lane, San Bruno
According to mapquest, it is about a 10 minute ride from the San Francisco International Airport.  I don't know what the history centre currently has, but years ago it contained quite a bit of information for California researchers.  (We aren't American, so we didn't use local records.)

At one time, the FHC in Oakland required reservations to use the equipment; I do not know if reservations are still required, or if they ever were required in San Bruno.

It looks like the NARA and History Centre are about two minutes away from each other, by car.

I lived in San Francisco at one time.  If you have any questions about the city, I may be able to help.

Thanks, Lisa. I'll have a look at those websites. It's handy if places are close together. It looks like the San Francisco public library also has quite a bit of potentially useful info.
