I think the lady may have rheumatism in her hands, certainly in her right hand,  ... they were obviously a brave couple to have had the photo taken ... which might explain why they look uncomfortable

Going back to your original questions.

The number is fairly certainly a negative number put on by the professional photographer so that new copies can be ordered.

With regard to date it would be useful to have some more information.

Does the original photograph have a complete white border which was lost during scanning?
Is the back of the photograph plain or is it a postcard.  If it is a postcard, is it divided with a vertical line separating the address and an area for a message?

Its interesting to note that the lady has also had all her teeth removed ... often done as a 21st birthday gift ... to avoid  toothache and decay later in life !
EEkk!!  :o :o and to think, I only gave my girls money...   :) ;D

Grief, what were they thinking??

Prior to World War 2 it was very common for people to have their teeth removed and to wear dentures. My father had all his removed to avoid toothache, but as I remember suffered continous problems from small pieces of bone working through his gums. My mother had lost hers through gum disease treatable today. At that time there were no antibiotics.

Hi Damian  :)

Hello Damien
this has already been dated for you if you look at the link put up by Pels.
jim

Hi Damian,  :)

Although it's a slightly different query, I wonder if you lost the thread to the picture, after posting it the first time ?

Have a look at this link, Jim and others have given an opinion :

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,424470.0.html

Pels.

I agree with Jim's dates on the other thread.  It's probably prior to WW1, maybe 1910-ish.

The man has two club feet  :-\

The number in the corner will be something the photographer wrote on the negative.  Probably a reference the entry in his daybook, so that he could look up the number later on if the person wanted a copy of the photo or an enlargement or whatever.

Cheers
