Without seeing your picture I an obviously guessing.  However if it was taken by a beach or similar cameraman then after the picture was taken you were given a slip with a number on it and you had to call at the kiosk the next day to see (in their window) and possibly purchase your photograph.  The number on the picture was the number on your slip.

My answer was obviously irrelevant.  The picture looks to me as though it is very early 20th century from the woman's dress.  Can you tell us what the back of the photograph looks like?

Hi Damian,  :)

Although it's a slightly different query, I wonder if you lost the thread to the picture, after posting it the first time ?

Have a look at this link, Jim and others have given an opinion :

The man has club feet !

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_foot

My mother was born with them too, and had 39 operations on them ... I believe that nowadays they can straighten babies feet with splits and/or plaster casts right from birth, thus avoiding much surgery.

Its interesting to note that the lady has also had all her teeth removed ... often done as a 21st birthday gift ... to avoid  toothache and decay later in life !
