Tunnacliffe Road & Tunnacliffe Hill

I am interesting in learning the history behind how Tunnacliffe Road and Tunnacliffe Hill in Huddersfield were named. 

My husband's family (Tunnacliffe) came from Lepton with one being a stone mason, and I am wondering if there is any connection.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

The Huddersfield historian George Redmonds treats this name very fully in his book about Almondbury Places and Place-names.

My ancestors, the Sykes family, came from Tunnacliffe Hill in Almondbury parish, and lived there for a few generations. I eventually managed to find the place on the map, but any additional information would be great. I wonder if George Redmonds' book mentions any families who lived there?

Hi.
I grew up on Tunnacliffe.
I have a 1634 map of the area, it shows a few enclosures belonging to a John Tunnacliffe.
It is a photocopy, and some of the text is a bit sketchy, however I believe the enclosures are a little further up the hill than expected, indeed the woods now called "New Laithe Shogg" appears to be one of them.

Names, as best as I can make out...

Hi Fitchycliffe,

Are you still researching your Tunnacliffe ancestors (your husband's?) from Lepton? We may share common ancestors. I saw on Ancestry that you had traced back to William Tunnacliffe, a mason, bp. 5 Dec 1819, who later married Sarah Matilda Hodges in 1844. Did you get back any further? I think I've traced William's line back another hundred years or so, if you're interested.

Sorry it has taken me this long to see and respond to your query. As Calverley Lad very correctly mentioned, I have not been on this site for a very long time. I am hoping that you may still be active on this site and will see this message. For what it is worth, yes I am still following the Tunnacliffe line and it seems that we may indeed have a common ancestor.
