William Roach - Whitehaven
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 12:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,
would it be possible for some kind person to help me locate my husband's ancestor,  William Roach, who was living in Queen Street Whitehaven in 1851?
I can't find a death for him or any other information.
Could somebody please help me to find him in any subsequent census or even his death?
This would be much appreciated
Regards
Jean S

Hi

Have you seen this one for 1871.

RG10 Piece 5260 Folio 96 Page 10

Looking at the 1851 it looks like he was born Lancashire but I couldn't quite make out where but it does look similar to Torver. The person above him (in the 1851) was born Whitehaven Cumberland. Have a look and see what you think.

Hi Jean

I am assuming you have access to the census, this is why I am just giving you the reference numbers.

This may be William in 1861 with daughters Rachel and Jane with him. All give their place of birth as Drigg although it says Ireland the original looks like Cumberland to me. In 1841 the family were living in Drigg, Cumberland. Have to say the birth year for William and Rachel is a little way out.

1861

I'll have another look for 1871. The reason I think he must still be around is the only death I can see in Cumberland presuming he stayed in the area was in 1880 at Bootle Cul, Cumberland. William Roach born about 1799.

Ok I have to log off for a while but I will be back with the information. Would you like the 1841 as well?

Am I on the right track with his daughters, Henrietta, Rachel, Agnes, Mary and Jane?

Evie,
you are great! Yes the daughters are his. I do have 1841 but that's all.
Thank you.

1851 Whitehaven

William, 50, Wid, Warehouseman, Lancashire Torver
Henrietta, 19, Dressmaker, Cumberland Drigg
Rachel, 17, at home, Drigg
Agnes, 15 at home, Drigg
Mary, 11, at home, Drigg
Jane, 6, scholar, Drigg

1861 Whitehaven ? Kibian Street

William, 54, Wid, Labourer (?grain ? ), Drigg
Rachel, 22, Housekeeper, Drigg
Jane, 16, House Servant, Drigg

1871 District Whitehaven Union Workhouse

William Rouch [sic] 73, Wid, Inmate, Pauper, Torver Lancs

Just a little suprised at the death being at Bootle Cul (although not too familiar with the geography of Bootle Cul). However, I couldn't see any more unless he is terribly mistranscribed.
