1841 address in Thornton, Bradford
« on: Monday 29 March 10 01:59 BST (UK) »
Someone once kindly looked up for me in the 1841 census a James Robinson aged 30 in Thornton, Bradford. The address was Mount Pleasant, but I can't find it on my modern map of Bradford. Maybe a farm now swallowed up by urban development?
What streets was it near?
Are there any 19thC maps of Thornton on the web?

Julia,

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question as to the location of Mount Pleasant but I think that this is the person you are looking for in 1841.

Hill Top, Thornton

James Robinson/  30/  Worsted Weaver
Martha Robinson/  25/
Sarah Robinson/  6
Zadak Robinson/  4
Anne Robinson/  3

All born in the county of Yorkshire

Although their address is shown as Hill Top, previous entries on the same page are listed as Mount Pleasant.

Best Wishes

Julia,

You are most welcome.  How's this for a co-incidence?  I decided to take a look for your family on the 1851 census and would you believe  they are listed on the very same page as my husbands great, great, great, great grandparents.

Here are the details just in case you don't have them already.

1851  School Ridge, Thornton

Sarah Robinson/  Unmar/   28/  Power Loom Weaver Worsted
Thomas Robinson/  Unmar/  39/ brother/  Power Loom Weaver Worsted
Betty Robinson/  Unmar/  31/  sister/  Wool Comber
Abigail Robinson/  unmar/  30/  sister/  Wool Comber
Siman Robinson/  unmar/  24/  brother/  Wool Comber
James Robinson/  widow/  41/  brother/  Power Loom Weaver Worsted
Zadak Robinson/ unmar/  14/ nephew/  Power Loom Weaver Worsted
Ann Robinson/ Unmar/   12/  niece/  Mill Hand

All born Thornton

If I can be of any further help just let me know.

Best Wishes
CJL

You might like to have a look on Google Earth. I've just had a look. My sister lived in Thornton and we used to walk up this road. I'm sure there were some very old, through light cottages there. Maybe one is where you ancestors lived! The pub mentioned is definitely there.

I too have ROBINSON ancestors who lived variously at Hill Top and School Ridge in Thornton.

One of the dwellings in School Ridge, No. 12 was also called Rose Vine Cottage and in 1911 the occupants were:

Samuel ROBINSON, born 1850 in Wilsden
Sarah Ann ROBINSON née SUNDERLAND, born 1856 in Haworth
Frederick (1876 in Denholme)
Sarah Alice (1878 in Thornton)
John William (1880 in Thornton)
Hannah (1881 in Thornton)
Lena (b. 10 May 1884 in Thornton)
Bertha (1886 in Bradford)
Emma (1888 in Bradford)
Linton (1890 in Bradford)
Newman (1892 in Bradford)
Sam (1894 North Bierley)
Lillie (b. 21 May 1896 in Thornton)
Elizabeth (b. 20 Jun 1898 in North Bierley)

References to "Bradford" and "North Bierley" are likely to be births in either Allerton or Thornton.

Family legend has it that as the family grew in size, another senior member of the family had to have a 'quiet word' with my Great Grandfather to curb his enthusiasm!

Thank you, that's interesting, but I'm still trying to work out how these Robinsons are related to the other lot.
