Walker/Payne marriage at Lissadell possibly
« on: Monday 29 March 10 14:05 BST (UK) »
Hello;   I looking for a marriage of a farmer from Lissadell, Co Sligo with name of Walker, who married Mary Payne. I am told they had 9 children, one being Alexander Walker born around 1856. He went over to Lansachire & joined the police. A baptism for him would be appreciated.

He married Alice Butterworth in 1878 & I have him on 1881, 1891 & 1901 censuses born 1856 Ireland.

Thanks John

If I'm reading this correctly you are looking for Alexander Walker's father (Alexander married 1878 Alice Butterworth)? Marriage certificate should list father's name and occupation.

It looks like there's possible match for the father of Alexander Walker mentioned by agho on Griffiths. He is sharing a house, offices, and about 46 acres of land with a Thomas Walker in the civil parish of Drumcliff and the townland of Ballinphull (which seem to be spelt as Ballinfull on modern maps). Their landlord and neighbour is Sir Robt Gore Both .. which fits the Lisadel house area.

see : John Walter, Ballinphull townland

Hello & thanks to you all for your help...

I will be following up these leads by getting marriage certificate as suggested (before the price goes up in a few days) I have the index as Ashton 8d/557 in Mar 1878.

This Walker is most likely related to the Matthew Walker of my previous thread whose father may be the Thomas sharing the house with John as found by Shane on Griffiths.

see...  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,396021.0.html

And again Alexander was a Lancashire policeman like Matthew - & the Lancs Archives can supply information from their police records.

cheers John

Update... I have now had the marriage cert of Alexander Walker to Alice Butterworth in 1878 in Lancashire which names his father as Thomas Charles Walker. Alexander & Alice's second son born 1883 was named Alexander Payne Walker, more or less confirming that Alexander (senior) & Matthew Robert Walker are brothers, sons of Thomas Charles Walker & Margaret Payne. Both were in the Lancs police force, & records for them both state thet were born Ballinfull, Co Sligo; Alexander in 1856 & Matthew in 1866. They were protestants by religion. The marriage of Thomas & Margaret is on the IGI being on 8 Mar 1847, Ireland. Can you get marriage & birth certificates from the Irish equivalent of the GRO ?

Full Civil registration started in 1864, so there will be Birth, Marriage and Death certs available for these. In addition non-Catholic marriages were registered from 1845. see the topic : 2 Minute Introduction to Irish Records for details on searching the BMD index, ordering certs etc

Not sure whether you've seen this in IGI - 3 children of Thomas Walker & Margaret Payne:
1. Anne Jane born 18 Feb.1864 Carney, Co.Sligo (page 257 in civil register)
2. Mathew Walter born 20 June 1866 Carney, Co.Sligo (page 334 in civil register)
3. Margaret born 1 Apr,1871 Co.Sligo
