Roman Catholic church archives?
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 14:52 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have a great great uncle who was ordained a RC priest.  When he died in 1940 he was the Very Rev Canon Michael McGrath and was a parish priest in Oldham.  He was originally from Cork and as they did not have church colleges he may have gone to St Patrick's in Maynooth.  I have contacted them and they have told me they have two matches.
I was wondering if anyone know of any existing resources for finding more details about a priests tenure, where they served, when they were ordained etc...

Thanks in advance
Paul

Hi Paul,

what you need to look for is the Catholic Directory for the Archdioces in which Oldham falls, for any year when your gguncle was likely to be there (I think that they are published annually).

It would be expected to list all the parishes, churches, mass centres, schools, etc. and also have a list of all the clergy.  The list of clergy may give details of date of ordination and perhaps where they studied.

If there is an archdiocesan archives, they may have copies of the old directories even if they do not keep parish registers there.

By comparing directories from different years you could also build up a record of which parishes he was in at different times, if he was moved around.

As Very Reverend Canon, I think that he would have held a position with respect to the Cathedral and may also have held offices such as Rural Dean or other special positions, in addition to being parish priest.  These would also be listed in the catholic directory for the corresponding year(s).

If you have his death certificate and so a precise date of death, you could also look for a possibly quite detailed obituary in the newspapers, including catholic newspapers.  Prayer cards would probably have been printed and distributed at the burial service and sent to relatives too and may have some details of his life on them too.

Yes That is right. The Irish Catholic Directory was published annually from 1836 and list Priests by diocese and Parish.

I was actually thinking of the English ones as recording his career in Oldham and possibly noting his qualifications and ordination dates which might help to track down where he studied.

Great thanks for the replies I'll check them out.  As he came from Ireland I may have to work backwards from Oldham to Ireland and where he studied.

Would you know if these are online?  I'll google it later anyway.

Not sure if it would have been the same in 1940 but had a quick look through four different books from the 1980s and found that the information fron different dioceses varies but what they have in common is that all have detailed Obituaries of priests in their Diocese (serving there at time of death).

Some Dioceses call these books directories and some call them year books.  Unfortunately I don't have any from the Lancashire area so don't know if they followed a similar pattern, but if you could get hold of the one for 1940 or perhaps 1941, for that diocese, it might answer all or most of your questions.

I doubt that any (except possibly recent ones) will be on-line as catholic archives tend to to be small and served by part-time archivists but it's possible that a major library or local history centre in the region might keep copies too.

Good luck with your search.
