looking for Thomas Grinter 1878
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 11:28 BST (UK) »
I'd like some help in finding a missing ancestor. Thomas Grinter was born in 1878 in Leeds to Richard Grinter and Jane Hunton. In the 1881 census he's in Hinton St. George in Somerset. He married Mary Davies in 1899 in Newcastle Emlyn, Carms and had a son, William Samuel in June 1899. By the 1901 census he was not at home, and I can't find him anywhere else. Any help would be gratefully received!

Hi both, and welcome to RootsChat Wendy  :)

Looks like he was in the Army. He joined The Yorkshire Regt (Regimental Number 6448) at Pontypridd in January 1901 (and deserted in September, apparently)

Interestingly, his next of kin is not his wife but his sister Elizabeth, living in Kent, and the particulars to marriage and children are left blank.

Age 19, born Leeds, height 5'6", complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, trade haulier, numerous tattoos

Oh wait - the age isn't quite correct, is it? Could it be a different Thomas, I wonder? I can't see any other Thomas Grinter born Leeds ca. 1880 ???
