2x Granny a bigamist-ok-but incest too???
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all;
This is a question that may have an answer I don't want!
Was it legal to marry a half-nephew in the 1870s????

Having established that my 2x Great Grandmother was technically a bigamist, now that the London PRs are on-line I think the husband in question was the son of her much older half brother-- possible??

thanks in advance
Sally

I believe the answer is No it was not legal. Having said that in very many areas the clergy seem to have turned a blind eye to marriages within the permitted limits.As a result of such a marriage I find that I am my own fifth cousin! It does give me an excuse when accused of talking to myself I reply, No, to my 5th cousin!

In a city it might have been easier to cover such a relationship up if the spouses were related.

Thank-you,
I didn't think it was quite proper!! It was in the east end, and I suppose if you are in for bigamy you may as well go the whole hog!!
Thank-you again!

Looking at your area interests I think you will most likely find it in the Somerset/ Dorset ancestry from the 19th century and earlier.But why worry, you can't do a thing about it. Many of my mother's lines have interbred at a small village near Cambridge over several centuries, and as it is quite beyond my control I think of it as a curiosity only.
