According to FREEBMD, more than one child's birth was registered 1912-1916 in Devonport with the surname COOMBER and mother's surname also COOMBER. Have you tried obtaining their birth certificates to see if Edith was mother of all 3, and, if a father's name was given?
Now here's another piece of what seems to be a very convoluted pie.
In 1891 the following family is shown living in Devonport:
James COCKS HEad 50 b. Camelford, CON
Jane COCKS Wife 58 b. St Neots, CON
Annie COOMBER Dau 27 b. Camelford
James H COCKS SOn 12 b. Devonport
Jethro COOMBER Son/law 32 Seaman RN b. Haywards Heath, Sussex
James W COOMBER G'son 7 b. Devonport
Annie J COOMBER G'dau 5 b. Devonport
John J COOMBER G'son 2 b. Devonport
Edith M. COCKS G'dau 4 months b. Devonport
No birth is registered for an Edith COOMBER 1890 - 1895, but there is a birth registration for an Edith Mary COCKS Dec qtr 1890 vol 5b page 284 Devonport.
Jethro COOMBER married Elizabeth Ann COCKS in 1882.
By 1901, Jethro is presumably at sea, mother is shown as Annie COOMBER, 38 b. Camelford, with the following children all shown with last name COOMBER:
William 17; Annie 15; Charles 12; Edith 9. By 1911, William COOMBER & Edith COOMBER are living together.
Doesn't help with the AYRES marriage, but hopefully fills in a few gaps.
