RC Burial Toxteth
« on: Sunday 04 April 10 11:45 BST (UK) »
Hi There,

Something that has bothered me for many years is the resting place of my gt grandmother.
Her name was Bridget Swinnerton (nee Kelly/Kerry) and she is shown in the records as being
buried at Our Lady of MountCarmel , High Park Street Toxteth Liverpool,  on The 16th Feb 1890.

The thing that bothers me is did this church have a grave yard attached, or was just the service held there before interment elsewhere?  I have never been able to confirm this.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks
Swinno.

Hi

As far as I know, by that time there would be very few burials in churchyards at that time because they were all full up.So it is likely that the burial record at the church is likely for the religious ceremony,(ie funeral service), not a record of the actual burial

On this link is a list of RC cemeteries in Liverpool. The cemetery records are at the Liverpool Record Office

Couple of places to try

http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/liverpoolrcburials/

I'd try Ford, the largest of the RC cemeteries in Liverpool at the time, but also Allerton (online http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/deathinthepooloflife/corporationcemeteries/allerton/allertons.htm  ) or Yew Tree (not online as yet). Toxteth Park is also a strong possibility - on a quick scan, there are several Swinnerton's listed, but no Bridget so far.

Good luck

Thanks Everyone for the replies to my request.

No Bridget is not interned in Toxteth or Allerton.  Ford or Yew Tree could be possible
places of burial.  But they are so far away from the Toxteth area.
I will check these out

Thanks
Swinno.

From the Liverpool history projects site:
Quote
from 1883 onwards 80% of Catholics were buried at Ford

I have several buried in Ford from the Toxteth area.

Ann,

The more I read and look it seems very possible that my Ancestor could very well be there.
I have other family buried there but much later.
I will see if I can find here in there.  Although under the circumstances they were in I doubt if there will be a headstone.

Thanks
Brian.

I think the entry you have for Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be from the Libri Defunctorum registers. They sometimes recorded the place of burial in these registers. Hope this answers your question

Hi There,

From what I can remember and wrote down as it was a long time ago.
Yes they were the registers that I found the entry but there was no other
place of burial given.

Thanks
Brian
