Lyon's wife Betsy gave her birthplace as Titchmarsh Northants.Betsy is a pet name for Elizabeth.
Why do you discount her as being his wife?

It would be highly unlikely they have been given the name of their boss.Who is the "boss" foreman? owner?Families were protective of their name particularly those with standing in the community, they're not going to give it out to a bunch of foreigners as they saw them.
The usual was that a name would be Anglosised by the family or corrupted by others where pronunciation or spelling was a problem.
I think you have to believe the facts ie: Lyon had a son Jacob who had a daughter Betsy Barfield Asher;Betsy Asher gives her birthplace as Titchmarsh Northants & birth early 1790's;Elizabeth Barfield birth 1791 Titchmarsh.

Thanks, jim.....sorry....someone told me that this sometimes happened (re the name).....I agree that Elizabeth Barefield looks like Lyon's Betsy....just not looks as though William's first son could have been named after her brother.....maybe he was a very good friend of William's

If you get the 1869 death cert. for Elizabeth Asher that will tell you who her husband was if you have doubts.

Thanks, jim......I haven't been able to find marriages for either Lyon or William to their Elizabeths (have looked in Nottingham, Northants & the part of London where Elizabeth Barefield's brother was living.....although, as far as William is concerned, all we officially know is that his Elizabeth was born outside Nottinghamshire....so I'd really have to search everywhere else)

Looking at the German PR's there are lots of Asher/Escher's & a few Leonhardt & variants & even more Wilhelms.
It seems unlikely you will find anything on William's Elizabeth so it's better to consentrate on Lyon & Betsy.

Hello……

Just in case you are still considering the Asher families in Arnold I thought I would mention what is available to help decide if they could belong to you but I am still confused……and would his occupation have changed from Hawker to Labourer?

Baptisms at Arnold = Parents William & Elizabeth ASHER

Robert – 24th December 1823 - father occupation Labourer – abode Bestwood
William – 4th February 1826 – father occupation Labourer
John – 29th April 1827 – father occupation Labourer
Elizabeth – 30th August 1829 – father occupation Labourer
William – 8th April 1832 – father occupation Labourer
Olivia – 4th October 1834 – father occupation Labourer

There are 20 Asher burials at Arnold the first was a Mary in 1789 “dau of John”.

The earliest baptisms at Arnold for Asher was 1784 – parents John & Mary
John 1784
Mary 1786
Martha 1790
Thomas 1792
William 1794
Joshua 1795
Thos 1801

Then the baptisms for the children of William & Clementine (one she is transcribed Ervyatine)
John 1821
Mary Ann 1822

Marriage at Arnold – 2nd October 1820
William Asher & Clement Brown

These are the Elizabeth & William Asher’s buried at Arnold

Elizabeth – 23rd May 1815 aged 16
Elizabeth – 23rd Oct 1825 aged 32

William – 14th Feb 1826 – aged 8 weeks
William – 11th May 1842 – aged 55

What is confusing me is – we have two William’s that were around in Arnold – in 1841 the one that is married to Elizabeth is in Arnold but I can’t find the one married to Clementine, I can’t even find her in 1841 to see if her William is with her….she doesn’t die until 1870…. she is on the 1851 & 1861 so she must be somewhere….

Regards

Sheila

I thought William had married twice but the children overlap so a different couple.William was an ag.lab. & Lyon a General dealer (hawker).
As William & Elizabeth had a son with middle name Lyon it's assumed William & Lyon are brothers.

Hi Jim,

I think greyingrey was wondering if the Arnold lot were born after the children she knows are hers…

Baptisms - Nottingham St Mary – parents William & Elizabeth Asher

George T Bayfield Asher  - 4th September 1815 – fathers occupation Hawker – abode Queen St
Samuel Lyon Asher – 22nd January 1818 - fathers occupation Hawker – abode Newcastle St.

The change of occupation concerns me though….
