Sarah wife of miller, Thomas Sanders, Smarden area
« on: Monday 05 April 10 13:22 BST (UK) »
MY GG grandmother, Esther Sanders, was a daughter of Thomas Sanders and his wife Sarah. Esther's wedding cert states that Thomas was a miller and farmer. I have tried to find a record of Thomas and Sarah's marriage but have found two likely candidates!
Namely,
1809 01 October SANDERS Thomas to Sarah Pearce, Boxley Hollingbourne
or
1809 20 March SANDERS Thomas to Sarah Simmons, Maidstone (All Saints) Maidstone.

Esther was born in about 1829/30 so can't apply for a cert.

In 1851 census there is a Thomas and Sarah Sanders listed at Windmill, Frittenden so am guessing these are Esther's parents, but the previous census shows Jobb Sanders, so they weren't there very long, but would guess they are related.

I would just like to establish which Sarah was Esther's mother.

What does Esther give as her birthplace in the censuses? Is she the Frittenden-born Esther enumerated as a sister of Silas and Ezekias SANDERS in 1851 at HO107/1621/38/13?

The Monumental Inscriptions for Smarden show that Job did have a son called Thomas

I don't know. She married my gg grandfather Joseph Champion in 1858 and dies in childbirth later that year. Her residence at marriage was listed as Frindsbury, but then so was Joseph's - he had a habit of marrying his housekeepers.

1841 census shows Jobb Sanders to be younger than Thomas so I wildly guess that Thomas was his father and took over the Windmill for some reason. Perhaps the Job listed in the churchyard is Jobb's grandfather?

Thank you for that - very interesting. So presumably there were 2 mills in Frittenden - Orpin occupying the other one - maybe.

I guess if I can find out where Esther was born (which could be Frittenden, if she is this one listed on the 1851 census as housekeeper for her brothers Silas and Ezekias at Snug House, Biddenden Road, Smarden) then perhaps the church records would say something about her parents?

I'm not aware of any Frittenden baptism records being available online.

The KFHS has baptisms 1678-1707  on fiche.
