Help please
« on: Monday 05 April 10 16:24 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who has family connections to David Painter who was born on 11.9.1757 in Newburgh?  He married Catherine Burt in 1786.  She was born on 22.2.1759.  They went to have one son also called David.

I am at a loss as to who David's parents were and also those of Catherine Burt.

According to David and Catherine's marriage certificate he was stated to b e servant to Peter Painter in the Abbey.  Would this have been an occupation?

I have come across a Peter Painter and Margaret Jackson who had a son David but am unsure if these are the parents for David.

Any help would  be appreciated.

Terri

Hi Terri,
Sorry, I don't have any links with that family but had a look for you.
I'm not sure how you knew that David was born 11.9.1757. On Scotland's People free search Peter Painter and Margaret Jackson had a son, David, chr on 11 Sept 1757.
They also had a Katharine, 1761 [Peter was Patrick for this one] and Margaret, 1767
Catharine Burt chr 1 March 1759, parents were James Burt and Isobel Thomas marriage/banns 26 June 1756, Torryburn.
Good luck,
Rae

My name is Steven David Painter, my grandfather was David Painter, born 27th December 1878 in Auchtermuchty, son of David and Betsy Painter, married 5th December 1873 in Auchtermuchty.

I have a family bible left to me by my father, David Allan Painter, born in Durban South Africa.

Any other information you can give me would be very welcome.

Birth for David(senior) ?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBJD-ZRS

Birth for his wife ?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYVC-LZ4

From the Scotlandspeople website it looks like David's wife may have died just after the 1881 Census
Thomson Painter(other surname Dunn) death 1881 Auchtermuchty , Fife , born c1852

ev

Added - looking further back this line may be linked to David Painter and Catherine Burt  :-\

Thanks very much for the links and information, it helps a great deal, something confusing me a little, probably a clerical error, but the link for the birth of Thompson Ogilvie Dunn gives the gender as male????

Hello Steven, I believe we are distantly related. I am a relative of Jane Oliphant Painter Anderson from 'Muchty. I can remember my granny telling me about Dave and Elsie Painter who went to S Africa. I am happy to pass on info about the Painters although it gets pretty patchy when you get to Catherine Burt & David Painter. I do have a relative from this part of the family who still lives in Auchtermuchty. I also have a few photos.

I will post more of my research as soon as I can get my other computer working. The Painters came from Newburgh, Fife which is more towards the coast rather than the howe of Fife. There was an abbey in this area - Lindores Abbey which may be where the Peter Painter mentioned may have lived. The distance between Muchty and Newburgh is not far. Likewise Dunshelt is a few minutes away. Betsy is a common Fife name and is popular in this family. When I lived in this area I did visit the local cemeteries. My Great Grandmother was Jane Oliphant Painter Anderson. Her mother was Jane Oliphant Painter. More details to follow.
