John Joseph Monahan birthplace c. 1850
« on: Monday 05 April 10 21:49 BST (UK) »
New to Rootschat - trying to find info on my Grandfather, John Joseph Monahan, thought to have been born in Wexford c. 1850 - no idea what area. Married Fanny Fitzpatrick in Naas 1896, worked in Dollards Printers in Dublin. His Father, also from Wexford was named Robert Monahan. I think he might have been a spirit merchant...

Any help greatly appreciated to this novice!!

John's birth is before civil registration started in 1864, so church records will be required to find details on him and his family, To do this you will need to establish his religion and a location in Co. Wexford that he was from - i.e. parish, town or townland. Other than a few basic extracts no comprehensive Co. Wexford parish records are available on line at the moment.

Thanks for your reply Shane.  I know he was Catholic, but unfortunately don't know what area of Wexford he hailed from!

The name MONAHAN and MONAGHAN are in evidence today in county Wexford, and they
also appear in the Griffiths Valuation (1847-1864) for Wexford (both spellings) but the
name Robert Mona(g)han does not appear in the index which is odd as only those that
were travellers and campers were not shown, anyone of age that could own, lease or
rent a property were listed.

However perhaps the best match's are the MONAGHAN that do at least show a John and Joseph in BALLYHUSKARD, KILLISK & TEMPLESHANNON locations maybe of further research

The 2003/4 electoral roll for Wexford lists only 7 families, whereas the name MONAGHAN
lists at least 15 families.

If Robert was a spirit merchant it would seem strange for him not to have property of some sort and therefore be listed on Griffiths. It's probably worth following up other Monahan/Monaghan records as mentioned by Mike above, as it's possible that he shared a property (e.g. with other family members) and may not be listed himself.

Also as a spirit merchant he could be listed in Slater's directory of 1846, which might help locate the family - http://www.failteromhat.com/slater.htm

Grateful for both replies and have noted possible leads. On the (1895) marriage cert of J.J., his father, deceased, was listed as a spirit 'grocer' not merchant - my mistake - may have had one of those shops that sell everything!
