From Special Report on the Mineral Resources of Great Britain by the Geological Survey of Great Britain, 1915 p 50

The topic is The Iron ores of Scotland, Area 2 (Main Outcrop from Saltcoats to Kilmarnock), and includes a list of localities where analysis has been made of the outcrop.

(1) Brackleheugh (Breakplough).

A good section is exposed on the sides of the Brackleheugh Burn, 1/4 mile N. of Stevenston, near Kerelaw Mains...

Looking again at various maps I think this Brackleheugh Burn must be the same as the Quarrel Burn.

For Brackleheugh I found this, from The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, Friday May 11, 1900 p2. An extract from Stevenston – Past and Present by A.M.M.

A postcard of Brackleheugh. The cottage furthest from the camera on the left is still there and can be seen on streetview. This view is looking east from Brackleheugh across the bridge over Quarrel Burn towards Kerelaw Road.

As a boy, resident in Saltcoats, my father and I would walk up Dalry Road, turn right towards "Middlepart Farm" and continue along the back roads to Kerelaw. I recall the old abandoned house with a large portico (?) out front and upon entering a large staircase directly in front of you. I also recall a very large chestnut tree at the back of the house.
Thanks to those who contributed to jog my 75-year old memory.
