Ann Walford birth/christening Marks Tey nr Colchester
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to track down the birth/marriage details of Ann Walford who gave birth to Gainsford Gibling Walford. He was christened 22 June 1800 in Marks Tey and it was logged as 'bastard son of Ann Walford'.  Any help in tracing Ann would be greatfully received. I'm wondered if she didnt use her regular church for the christening but dont know how churches handled the christenings of children born out of wedlock in those days. Any feedback would be welcome.

Gainsford appears on the 1841 census in Little Wilbraham with his family but the mother wasnt residing with him.

Hello Devoted

That name rings a bell (who could forget it!)

2004 was the year

But it doesn't appear to help much at first glance........but it might help others in finding Ann

Hello devoted

There is another scenario!
What if Ann wasn't born a Walford but married one, he died and Ann had a relationship with ANother and Gainsford Gibling Walford was a result of that?
The age of Ann doesn't appear to be known so she could have been a teenager but she might have been in her 40's?

Also......Gibling appears to be a local surname so where is the connection, is it a connection with Ann pre Gainsford's birth or post?

Hi Bryant

Anything's possible regarding Ann. I'm clutching at straw's really re George Gibling Walford's link to Gainford Gibling Walford but Ive never come across any evidence to link Gainsford to George's family.  It looks like I'll have to finally put Ann to bed and the link to the other Walford's in the region. Thanks for taking an interest.

Summary of what we have........

George Gibling Walford died in 1874 Braintree (stated age is 67)

In 1841 I assume this is him....

No I havent. On a tree in Ancestry someone had George's parents as William and Susan Reeve  so I've just made contact and the person said they didnt get the information from parish records. It had been a while since they researched the line but they thought it came from Boyd's marriage index but that the connection was speculative on their part.

1803 Jacob WALFORD & Susan EDWARDS  Dedham
1805 William WALFORD & Susan REEVE Bocking *
1815 Samuel WALFORD & Sarah GOODY Halstead
1815 Charles WALFORD & Sarah AUGER Burnham
1819 William WALFORD & Mary CHALLIS White Notley
1828 George WALFORD & Rebecca RAINER Bocking

I'll go and have a look at Seax again for Bocking.

Benjamin Rayner one of the witnesses and probably the brother? (not the father) married on the 4th Sep 1828 (less than two months after G.G.Walford) at the same St Marys, Bocking...he married Phyllis Bearman which incidently is the same surname as Benjamin Rayner's (the father of Benjamin Rayner who married in Sep 1828)  wife!.........

CP.....is it possible to have a look at that marriage of Benjamin Rayner and Phyllis Bearman

If both families ie the Walford's and the Rayner's were part of the Parish you wouldn't expect the witness Mary Maria Witting to be from the Church so from which family is she?

It is not impossible that Ann Walford stated 1841 census age of 80 residing at Swan Yard, Bocking is the Ann you are looking for if not she might be Ann's mother also named Ann? and it looks like Ann died in 1843 in either the Sep qtr or the Dec qtr Braintree R.D (life is never easy but they could be Ann and her mother?) and you might expect her age and who registered the death to be on that death cert/s, a family member hopefully?

If Ann was born a Walford and never married one? this lady has to be looked at
Birth.....Ann Walford born 6th Jun 1775   Independent, Bocking, Essex, parents James & Ann Walford
Brothers of Ann would include Thomas b.1776, William b.1778, James b.1774 and Edward b.1780
