Samuel Gates and Mary xxxxxx about 1720 Midhurst (poss)

Peter Gates and Katherine Roe about 1680 Midhurst

Edward Roe/Roo/Roue/Rowe and Dorrety/Dorrety/Dority/Dorritie Midhurst about 1652.

No Peter Gates to a Katherine Roe, but there is this one?
Place: Midhurst, West Sussex, 12 Nov 1679:
Groom: Peter GATES
Spouse: Hannah SILVESTER

But... I found this entry for a Katherine Row, Midhurst
Place: Midhurst, West Sussex,  Date: 31 Apr 1683:
Bride: Katherine ROE
Spouse: Peter GASE

Unfortunately, no surname for the bride on this one, not sure if this is who you are looking for but it's the only one for that time.

I think that Peter Gase is near enough to Peter gates for a wedding to Katherine Rowe. I know he married a Katherine as the children's baptisms show that.


All totally brilliant altho the Eastbourne is a surprise.

Ooops! Fizzy - hope  Eastbourne in your last post was a slip of the finger..Easebourne is a small hamlet very close to Petworth, certainly with walking distance.  Eastbourne is on the other side of the county.

Hey thanks.

I really did think it was Eastbourne as I dont know Sussex that well so thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I thought that Eastbourne was rather a long way away from Midhurst but I thought that perhaps he had met someone who was in service and had gone to her birthplace to wed !!!

No worries Fizzy - that's the beauty of Rootschat and the separate County Boards, there is usually someone around who has local knowledge and most folk read their own County Boards even if their own research is elsewhere

A very kind person actually went and had a look at an address for me in Cambridge - seems he lives 5 mins walk away from it  Great stuff!

Yes I once worked out for someone that Marble Lamb Devon on a census was actually Morwellham !!!! Woolfardisworthy in Devaon was always referred to as Woolsery by locals and thats what appears on censuses too.

As you say local knowlwedge is very valuable.
