Ireland - Cumberland
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hello,
 :)
i am trying to find any info on if/when many Irish came over to Cumberland for work etc.  I have tried googling it but have not come up with much.

Does anyone know of this?  If so was there a particular time period and did they come over from a particular area?

Many thanks  :)

Ireland was part of the U.K. so no records were kept of people travelling between Ireland and England, Scotland and Wales.
If you are trying to find when a partiular family/community would have move to that area you could search census records to check place of birth/age in census, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi thanks for your reply, but i'm afraid it's not as simple as that!  never is is it ::)

We think my family  went over to Ireland from Scotland originally then came back over to England.  My ggg grandfather is on the census as being born in Carlisle Cumberland birth about 1831/32  but can find no trace of him on any parish records etc,  he also at some point changed his name from Mclaren to Clarney then back to Mclaren then back to Clarney again!!   Very frustrating when trying to trace him!

He father is down on the marriage cert as William Mclaren - labourer but have ben unable to find him on any census, there is also another 3 brother floating out there somewhere but not a hint of a trace!   :(

So i am wondering if  he or his father came over from Ireland!

Clutching straws while gathering some historical info  ;D

Unfortunately the dates you are interested in are very early for existing Irish records. To trace a family in Ireland you'd need to know both their religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just a county) and then see if any records survive.

A lot of Irish moved to the UK for work in the coal mines and I know this was going on from the late 1800s.  It is well known that the English coal workers were unhappy with this influx and particularly where the Irish were provided with houses, as part of their package.
Areas from the Midlands to the North of England, where coal mining was carried out, were easily accessible to the Irish and to this day Irish surnames abound in these localities.

Hi again

I was responding to your remark -  "Trying to find out why people left Ireland to come to look for work in Cumberland  and if that was a popular place to go".

A friend is 99 years old and begin working down the mines in neighbouring Northumberland when he was 13 - so this comes direct from the horse's mouth!

The Coal Mines needed labourers too, as not all staff were miners.

Cheers

Thank you again  -   What a life they had back then - down the mines at 13 etc our kids don't know they are born  ;D

I hadn't thought of the other jobs involved with the mines!

Cheers
