Robert Davies b.1847 d.1881

is missing from the 1871 census.

I have him b.1847 (ish) Bolton
1851 living Bolton
1861 living Bolton
1871 ?
1872 married Eliza Sixsmith
1881 living Stockton Durham awaiting his ship
1881 died in Odessa Russia whilst onboard ship Hesper

His parents (Abel and Margaret) and siblings are on the 1871 but he isn't.
I wonder if he was at sea and how do I search ship census records?

Can anyone help fill in the last piece of my jigsaw?

There are 18 'Robert DAVIES' on the 1871 Lancashire Census Name Index!

None in/near Bolton though!
Hertzberger, Highton, Walker, Eaton, Webster, Brown, Wright, Speed, Dodd, Holland, Melling, Murphy, Edwards, Bennett, Collins, Critchley, Duffy, Owens, Morgan & Humphreys

Mmmm  ???

Been having trouble for weeks with this one.
Every census shows him born in Bolton.

The only thing that I can come up with are that his Mum and brother were living in Gloucester on th 1871 with Dad and 2 siblings still living in Bolton so maybe he had been living with Mum but went off to sea before the night of the census.

Does anyone know how to check the ship census records for 1871 please?

You will find that there was No provision made for the Census to Include 'Men at Sea' (only those in a Port on the night of Census)

Well I thought that was the last piece of the jigsaw but I wonder if there is a grave in Odessa  ???

I have had a look on Lan-opc and there are 4 babtisms for Robert Davies between 1845 and 1849
1 in Preston
2 in Liverpool
1 in Manchester
nothing for Bolton, sorry

Davies Robert    Eastern Bolton       Bolton      mothers maiden name Holland     EB/16/450
Do you know Margarets maiden name....I`ll see if I can find a marriage...

Thinking about it, that's quite spooky as my Robert Davies' dad married Margaret Eliza Holland! (could be a connection there!)
