Ooh - interesting:

Ruth Swetman married Charles Lawrence 18 Feb 1800 in Salehurst.

Can't be the same one though!  I think this is her mother.  Ruth Swetman baptised in 1797 is shown as illegitimate, mother Ruth.  This Ruth had another illegitimate child named Charles in 1800.

So perhaps Ruth junior took Lawrence as her surname after her mother married in 1800 - to her father?

Nell

Assuming that John's certificate has come from GRO, I've found that if you email the local Register Office with the details from the certificate you have (to show you're not trying to pull a fast one) and then query, in this case,  the mother's maiden name, they will look at their copy of the certificate which will be written in a different hand.  I have done this a couple of times and had a speedy and helpful response.

Thanks for your help - you are unearthing some gems

alpinecottage
I shall give this a go - its worth confirming our theory
How do you locate the local office - is there a particular site that formally lists the local offices?

Google "Sussex Register office", or "what register office covers....(name of place)" and you should find it.

Sorry I can't help more as I'm not familiar with Sussex.

I emailed Hastings (East Sussex) Registrar sending a copy of my GRO cert. They have responded v. quickly and advised by email that the name on their records is Ruth Laurence.
Excellent work all round - thanks.
