Cambs marriage index lookup please - SETCHELL
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 13:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My ancestor Catherine SETCHELL was born in Hemingford Grey (Hunts) in 1796, daughter of Thomas and Catherine SETCHELL. It appears that Thomas and Catherine did not marry in Hunts (not in the county marriage index), and it was suggested to me that they may have married in Cambs. Could sks please check whether there is a Thomas SETCHELL (and spelling variations) to Catherine marriage prior to 1796?
thanks,
matt

Hi cispt2,

Had a look but no sign of a Thomas Setchell marriage around the time you are looking for :'(

Not much help but not sure if you have this.
Catherine is still alive in 1841 living in Hemingford Grey
HO107/453/11/Hemingford Grey

Catherine SETCHELL, 75 ( born c  1766  ) Widow, born in County

Giving rounding of ages this could be a few years out so they could have married 1785 +/- a few years.

EDIT; Just found her in 1851 age 89, born c 1762, Hemingford
HO107/1749/623/34

Death;
Catherine SETCHELL, March 1853, St Ives, 3b 197

I dont know if you have a few pounds to spare but it may be worth investing in the death cert.
I got one from 1850 that was invaluable to me from the info provided.

The only Thomas/Catherine Marriage I can find is this, IGI, Extracted;
Thos SETCHEL
Cath ASHBELT, 29 September, 1783, Bronham, Bedford, England

Maybe a possibility as Beds/Hunts/Cambs are very close.
Also it is possible Thomas was not born Hunts.

Trish :)

There's a burial of Thomas Satchell age 71 in Hemingford Grey on 2 Aug 1831

Bromham is 30 miles from Hemingford Grey, but it must be a possibility as I can't see any children of Thomas and Catherine baptised in Bromham, nor were they buried there. The marriage entry in the parish register might give more detail eg Catherine of Hemingford Grey if you're very lucky!

There were Ashbolts in Hemingford Abbot so it's looking feasible. A number of children were baptised there 1740-60, but no Catherine.

Thank you David and Trish for your help - I'm going to post a request on the Beds forum to see whether the Beds marriage contains any useful info - it looks like a very good lead.

I've also recently found that a huge chunk of Hemingford Abbots marriage register is missing (~1765-1796) which may be an alternate explanation if Beds does not work out.

I'll let you know what I find.

cheers,
matt

This isn't what's shown on genuki, where there are no gaps in the marriage entries in the PR. Are you sure you're not confusing the PR with the Bishops Transcripts, which do seem to be missing for roughly the period you mention? However there is a gap in the LDS filming, between 1753 and 1813

Hi David,
I 'commissioned' some research with the Hunts Archives and explicitly asked this question - they confirmed the records are missing. This is also reflected at the GENUKI page on HA:

"Marriages: 1605-1851 (indexed transcriptions), Marriages 1754-1812 are missing, 1837-1956, 1957-1967, 1967-1978, 1978-1984, 1984-1991.....

Bishop's Transcripts: 1604-5, 1608-10, 1612, 1619, 1625/1690, 1693, 1700-2, 1706-14, 1716, 1718, 1720, 1722-41, 1743-7, 1749-61, 1764-5, 1796-1812/1813, 1815-18, 1820-2, 1824/1825-33, 1835."

cheers,
matt
