Richard DARRELL
« on: Thursday 24 March 05 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find out more about Richard DARRELL. Acccording to his marriage certificate in 1902, when he married Sarah Ellen MOSS, his birth was about 1878, his occupation was Sergeant (and what looks like 2nd Liporl),
His father's name is also shown as Richard a joiner.
Richard (the younger)married in Great Sankey, Lancashire, England.
I have been unable to find him on any of the English censuses and wonder if he could have been born in Scotland.
I know that he taught Gymnastics at the Rossall School in Lancashire from at least 1919 to 1939. Family members also think he was in the Black Watch regiment.
Any help appreciated.
Regards

Hi there,  I did a quick (free) search on Scotlands People for variations on the Darrell surname (Darell, Darrel, Daral etc) between 1876 and 1880 and there don't appear to have been any births during that time.  However, you may want to satisfy yourself by going in and searching more thoroughly.  Having spent a small fortune on this site I would recommend the following to narrow things down a bit (and save money).
Search statutory births with surname dar* to bring up any variations on the spelling, with first name Richard and between the years 1875 (or earlier) and 1880 (or later).
You could try the same on the 1881 and 1891 censuses.
If he was in the army, he may have been absent at census times.  For example, one of mine was in the Boer War and in S Africa and therefore missing at the time of the 1901 census.

I also looked in the national archives which lists all soldiers, using variations on the surname, and the only one I could find was WO339/136020 R Darrell 1914-18, but no mention of regiment.  You can see this by using this link and putting darrell under phrase and WO under department code (this is for War Office records).

Sorry there was nothing more hopeful.
Good luck

Thanks Lesley, for your reply and for your help. I have since looked at those sights and will look again in more detail later.  The Scottish site does seem rather expensive if you don't know enough to narrow it down, so I think I will try and find out a bit more first.
Thanks again,
