Hi there,
I am new to family tree research in Australia and would like some kick starts on filling some gaps for my OMalley branch please.

I have so far:

Edward O'MALLEY b. 1875 North Carlton, VIC; Occ: Tailor
   m 5 Jul 1905 Melbourne (district of Bourke). Helena Elizabeth TEMPLAR b. 1883 Balaclava SA

Their children: Helena Olive O'MALLEY b. 1907 North Carlton
                       Albert Edward O'MALLEY b. 3 Jan 1910 North Carlton  m. Phyllis Simmons in Lower Hutt NZ circa 1938 d. Lower Hutt NZ
                       Nora O'MALLEY b. ?       died abt age 20 of TB

 Edward O'MALLEY's parents: Charles Patrick O'MALLEY (misprint on marriage record has surname Templar) Occ: Painter; and Honora O'BRIEN

Helena TEMPLAR's parents: Edward TEMPLAR (occ: Farmer) and Emma GOVEY/GOREY

PROV VIC probate records (possible match?): Hanora O'Malley, of North Carlton, married, died: 19 Oct 1899.
Property at 594 Canning Street Carlton North and freehold shop at 210 Canning Street left to Patrick O'Malley (occ: employee of Melbourne City Council) and  Patrick John O'Malley, the younger (occ: civil servant )

Is someone able to confirm for me if this Hanora O'Malley is in fact the wife of Charles Partick O'Malley above?       

I need to confirm if Edward is her son as well, since he is not mentioned in the probate record.       

Is there a 'free' way to search for records of BDM's within Victoria, or indeed Australia?     I had to pay $17.50 just to get the marriage record for Edward O'Malley, and would appreciate any tips you may have for researching in Australia that won't blow my bank account LOL.

Hanorah Cath OMALLEY born 1900 Melb to Michl and Cath OLIVER

Couldn't find Edward's birth in Victorian Pioneer Index but did find following;

Kids born to Patrick OMALLEY and Honora WELCH/WESH/WALSH
Mary Honora 1872
Johanna 1873
Patrick John 1875
Michael Thomas J. 1876

Of more interest to you (from Vic Pioneer as well) though;

Charles OMALLEY and Honora OBRIEN had
Jane died age 4 1869 was born in Tasmania
Honora died age 21 Carl Hosp 1882
Catherine died age 23 Melb S 1882

Hi MO,
thank you very much for searching all these names. It would appear the Probate record I found on PROV VIC is not a match for our Honora sadly. As you found Charles O'malley and Honora O'Brien with three children it seems that is the more likely family.

And thank you 'Merlin' for finding those births and marriages, and in Tasmania of all places! I don't think my family know about that origin LOL.

Update - today I went to my local library as suggested - searched TAS birth index for all the Omalley's and Honora O'Brien and had no luck (aside from the "unnamed female" born 1862).

Will VIC death indexes give me more info like their birthplace and dates?

Had great success with the SA indexes for the TEMPLER family, but TAS seemed very elusive. I am really dying to know if these O'Malley and O'Brien ancestors were born there or immigrant convicts.

I tried searching TAS immigrant and convict lists on microfiche but had no matches (that I could see).

Sorry to pester you all again, but I'd really appreciate some more tips and tricks to locating these ancestors roots.

Some of the earlier deaths give place of birth but then just year of death and place.

Janine have your browsed through all the resources at the top of the Australian board.  Lots for each state and links to search for convict records.
