Michael BLAKENEY/BLAKENY - Convict
« on: Friday 16 April 10 23:22 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

My gggrandfather, Michael Blakeney (and his brother Patrick), was convicted of receiving a stolen pig and transported to Australia. He/they were convicted in Athy, Kildare in 1837. I know that they may not have been born there but this is the only clue I have at the moment.

Michael was born abt 1820 (died 1854 in Sydney - death cert gives no info re his origins other than Irish) - Patrick about 1818.

I guess what I'm asking is does anyone know or have access to any records where I might get more information? This is the first time I have searched for this branch in Ireland so any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Julie

PS: Apologies - should have added - I have him and his time is Australia ( he was a little naughty here too) just need to go back further with him.

Did he marry in Australia? The marriage cert might have more info.

Hi Annie,

I do have that - he received permission to marry and did so in Sydney 1842 - to Anne Brennan. As it is from the early churh records it only has who/when/where/occupation and witnesses - no other useful information d****t!!! Same with his death cert - that one only has name/age/dod/doburial /occupation & residence. I ordered his probate packet in the hopes of more info but no luck there alas! Although, he had obviously had probs with his wife but that's a whole 'nother story.

Chers,
Julie

This man is the brother of my great great great great (I think that's about enough greats) grandfather, Patrick. Apparently Patrick, a pork butcher in Parramatta was thrown off his horse and died. Does anyone know anything about Patrick and his family?

Hi RobbieT,

Welcome to Rootschat! Patrick is my gggrandfather's brother. They were both transport to Australia, arriving in 1838, for the offence of "receiving a stolen pig" :o :o :o (shock horror!). I do have some information on Patrick.

Patrick married Margeret Harrisky (spelling for Margeret per their marriage cert) in 1847. They had the 1 child (Patrick Michael) in 1850, I don't have his birthcert but Patrick died in the July of that year.

Here is a link to the death & funeral notices for you:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/12919652?searchTerm="patrick blakeney"&searchLimits=l-title=The+Sydney+Morning+Herald...%7Ctitleid%3A35|||l-category=Family+Notices%7Ccategory%3AFamily+Notices .

It was Michael (his brother) who fell from the horse. The brothers were both butchers. I am leaving for interstate tomorrow but will only be away a few days so I will get my stuff together and PM you some more info if you would like.

Cheers,
Julie

Hi Julie...actually I made a mistake. I spoke to Mum last night about this and she said  that Michael was the man not Patrick. Any information you have on him and family would be most gratefully received.

All of this means we are related! I am the grand daughter of Marjorie Moulton nee Hastings. Her mother Ada Vine Hastings was a Blakeney (b 1879 d 1971).

This is exciting.

Hi All,
I have been searching for any information on the Blakeney brothers Patrick and Michael from Athy Ireland.
Patrick is my GGGGgrandfather and there is not a lot on him from before he was convicted in Ireland and shipped to Australia.
I have recently found that his final resting place was the Devonshire Street Cemetery in Sydney, but since the reinterment he seems to have been lost.
If anyone has any information that they would care to share I would be most appreciative .

Cheers
Brett
