still_looking, no one of the name Hathaway owned or rented the house.  Was also a boarding school c1810-1860, the comb could have belonged to a teacher.

Prue, have rescanned the marks, this is the best I can do  :-\  The colour doesn't show very well, it's a very pale goldy colour.

Thanks everyone for your input so far.

Susan  :)

Thanks for the new pic, Susan - it is a bit easier to see than the first one...I now think the first letter might be a "G" and the second I still think is "W".
Unfortunately I can't quite place the maker (mind you, I'm only using online resources) and there is the fact that the usual silver hallmarks are missing, which suggests that it's not actually solid silver.  The closest I've found is a mark for George Wickes, early 18th century, but it's not exactly the same, although it has the same three elements of the two initials and the crown:

I wonder whether you might want to write to the Victoria and Albert museum to try to get an ID?  They might recognise the marks, or the design of the piece.

Thanks Prue, GW is looking good.  Daughter's OH has taken the comb to a friend who works with silver and gold, so in a couple of days should have the metal identified.

Contacting the Victoria and Albert museum is a good suggestion.
