James MacKay - Dornoch
« on: Sunday 18 April 10 10:03 BST (UK) »
My G.G.G.Grandfather was James MacKay b 1805 - occupation - Sawyer, married to Margaret b 1812 Clyne.  Their daughter Jane was my G.G.Grandmother (who moved later to India with her soldier husband, James Kirwan).  All living in Dornoch according to the 1851 census and thereafter.   As I'm new to the Scottish side of things, how do I go back further?

Hi there,

1851 Scotland census:-  Dornoch

James MacKay b 1805,  Margaret b1812,  Catherine b 1838,  Jane b 1841, William b 1845,  Anne b 1849,
and later, -  Lexy b 1851,  Hugh b 1854.  I can't find this family in the 1841 census.

Thanks Ev

Is that information information off someone's tree?   I'm a bit paranoid about info off other peoples trees and especially the IGI at the moment.  Where would they get the information from.  How you come across the primary sources is really what I'm interested in before 1837.  Are there Parish Records available on line?  Also, my James MacKay was a Sawyer, - is that the same as a joiner?   Sorry there are so many questions.  Bye the way, I love the photo of your spaniel.

Thanks again

the IGI contains the old parish records
however you are right to be wary of some of the entries
submitted entries are sometimes dodgy
extracted entries with a C number(birth/baptism) and M number(marriage)
should be ok
scotlandspeople website has the old parish records and these are pay per view

try this site for IGI entries(no submitted entries) -

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/

if you select scotland - sutherland - dornoch it will show you the parish records
that are available and the dates covered
batch number C110472 for example covers birth and baptisms 1731 - 1854
for dornoch sutherland
if go to the IGI search page and enter that batch number you are then free
to enter other information(surname/father's name/year etc) and only official
entries for dornoch should show

yes , that is someone else's tree
it looks like they have the death certificates for james mackay and catherine
gunn which should contain the parents names
a sawyer and a joiner could be the same thing - both wood workers

this could be margaret in 1881(from census disc)
dornoch sutherland
margt. gunn mackay 70 widow annuitant born brora sunderland durham eng.
thomas mackay 21 grandson ag. lab. born edinburgh

think margaret's birthplace should be sutherland scotland

looking at scotlandspeople website there is -
margaret mackay(other surname gunn) death 1886 dornoch sutherland
born c1811
