« on: Thursday 22 April 10 21:21 BST (UK) »
I've got a George Asher ( born 1815/6  who arrived in New York on 7/7/1840 on board the Ontario. (No idea what happened to him). How could I try to follow this up, please ?

Do you know where he was born?  Do you know of any other family members?

Thanks, Lisa....he was born in Nottingham, but the rest of his family stayed there (well, except for a brother who had been transported to Australia)

I don't see anyone on the 1850 U.S. census with a surname similar to Asher, with the following information: George, male, white, born in England within 5 years of 1816.

I don't see him in 1860, but my search wasn't as thorough, due to the amount of results (I didn't use a surname when I ran the search...I did check all surnames starting with "A").

Someone has a tree with George Thomas Asher, born 1815, Nottingham (with no additional information about him).  Is this your George?  If so, I can have another look, using all three names.

Thanks, Lisa. That sounds like the one I'm looking for....his full name on his baptism record was George Thomas Bayfield Asher
