A Book owned by Samuel Carson 1857
« on: Friday 23 April 10 03:28 BST (UK) »
Hello! I am a new member and I was motivated to join simply because I enjoy buying old books. I own a cafe in a small town in New Zealand and on a book hunt the other day in a second hand shop I found a book entitled Spurgeon's Sermons dated 1858. It was the inscriptions penned in the first few pages however that caught my attention.

The book was owned by Samuel Carson and bought by him AD 1857, February 10. If I can decipher the text correctly, he writes:
Before you be that borrow me
be sure you keep me clean
for I'm not like a linen cloth
that can be washed again
He then writes, Prockless, Drummaule, County Antrim.
There are several other pages penned in his hand.

There is a post by DixieDee on this site that may shed some light on the history of this family and I would be thrilled to pass this book on to a descendant of Samuel Carson.

I have books with similar inscriptions in my family, and they are treasured. Here is an opportunity to have the book returned to its rightful owners.

Please feel free to contact me if anyone is interested or knows of a family member of Samuel Carson who may want the book.

Cheers.

What a marvellous first post and a wonderful opportunity for this book to be reunited with a descendant of Samuel - how thoughtful of you.

There was certainly both a Samuel Carson and a Samuel Carson Jnr in the townland of Procklis (the closest sounding/looking to Rockless, which was not a townland name), in Drummaul parish at the time of the Griffiths Valuation, which would fit with the timescale of the book.

Having done some research on other names in the Parish, I shall certainly see if I can help shed some light on any possible descendants and am sure other members reading this will be happy to do likewise.

And indeed, as you say, in another post, Dixie Dee has noted the following:

Birth:
Josiah Carson, born 13 May 1875, Prockliss, Drummaul, Co Antrim.
Parents, Samuel Carson, a farmer, and Elizabeth boyd.a

I also have details of an 1888 directory for the area, and a Sl. Carson is noted at Procklis as is a J Carson.

"As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know."  - Donald Rumsfeld

"Trees without roots fall over!"

""People who never look backward to their ancestors will never look forward to posterity." - Edmund Burke

Hi,
I agree with Scotmum's first sentence. I did a parent search on the IGI and found the following children for Samuel Carson and Elizabeth Boyd who appear to have married in 1863 in Ballymena Registrars Office.

Joseph  5 Apr 1865
Mary     21 Jan 1868
Josiah   13 May 1874 (sic)
Anne     23 Feb 1876.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Welcome to Rootschat, wishing.

Procklis townland, Drummaul Parish, Co. Antrim isn't anywhere near Co. Down but if you'd like help tracing your Ulster ancestors start a new thread on the County Down board and we'll try to find information or suggest where you can search next.
