The double surname of Bruce-Gardyne still exists in Scotland including
....Evan D Bruce-Gardyne listed in the 2008 Electoral Rolls.

You would have to say they were related!.

Thank you Mike for your reply,

I have been chasing around the web looking for this family, without much luck.

As I have not been able to find a birth or marriage I thought I would try here on the Scottish board as the name seems to still be in Scotland to this day.

This is research I am doing for a friend. I will try to follow it up through the India link, as I have now found another daughter born out there in 1873.

Regards

Jennifer

Thomas's birth is listed on ScotlandsPeople in 1871, registered in St Andrews.  He's not listed on the IGI though, which is rather strange.

Evan Bruce Gardyne applied for a cadetship in the East India Comapny Army 1849/50.

Evan B. Gardyne married Alice A.H. MacLeod in 1869 in the Begal Presidency in India.

Their daughter, unnamed, was born 18 March 1870 at Umballa.  Evan was a captain in the 106th Regiment (Bombay Light Infantry).

Catherine, youngest child of of Major E B Gardyne of the 6th Royal Regiment died 6 Aug 1874 at Nowsherra en route to Sialkote in India.  She was a year old.

Evan had died by 12 November 1875, but I'm not sure where, probably in India.

The family lived in Angus/Forfar and are Lairds of Middleton.

Thank you Nell for that information. Agnes & Catherine are shown on the IGI as children of Evan Bruce-Gardyne and Alice Howarth. Could be possible the H stands for Howarth and her name was MacLeod.

Is there a Family tree showing how Evan fits in to the family. I am told he was the 3rd son of Major Bruce Gardyne.

Many many thanks for all help given.

I think this may be the scenario, but it should be checked if possible against primary sources.

Parents William Bruce Gardyne and Catherine Cameron.  William may have died in 1846 - he would have been about 70 or so.  Catherine died in 1871 in St Andrews!  She is listed as MacPherson too.  Both left testaments several pages long.

Children:
Thomas M (possibly Macpherson) born cir 1831 on the Isle of Man
James corn cir 1832 in Scotland
Evan 15 April 1833 Arbroath
Agnes Mary 20 April 1835 Arbroath died 1848

Evan and Alice are with Catherine in 1871 in Scotland at 7 Queens Street, St Andrews with baby Agnes.

Catherine B Gardyne 72 b Inverness-shire
Evan B Gardyne 37 Capt 106th Regt b Arbroath
Alice Gardyne 22 b Carnpore?
Agnes 1 b Umballa
plus four servants.

Fitting all the other Gardynes together is proving a challenge, but there are a number of testaments which might help piece it all together.
