Might be Nettie, or Hettie (Hettie is a pet name for Esther)  :)

I would say that )Hettie( or )Nettie( had been added later, perhaps by a family member.

I'll vote for Nettie - the N carrying over from Ann and the Ettie for Esther. This collapse of two first names  into one happens quite often.

Yes I thought Nettie too-although officially named Ann Esther,it sounds like mum and dad would be calling her Nettie.

Thanks everyone.

The cert is a copy issued when she was 11.
The writing looks consistant with the rest of the page, but as if added as an afterthought ( in backward brackets ) which would fit well with the idea of it being the name she was known by. I've come across several pet names in the family, but this is the first to make it onto a birth certificate.

thanks again
nuff.
