Would it be likely that a military birth in Fermoy would be recorded as Limerick?  Is it possible that Limerick would be the closest major town?

I have a James Galbraith born 1837 and his birth is recorded as Limerick.  The birth was listed to the 27th regiment of foot.  My Gr GR GR Grandfather was James Galbraith, Drill Master Sergeant stationed at Fermoy Barracks around late 1850's to early 1860's, so I think it may be him.

Fermoy would be much closer to Cork City than Limerick city...just over 30km vs over 100km to Limerick

Since the birth in this case is before Civil Registration started I am guessing that the birth is from the regimental/overseas BMD register.. which could possibly have use different districts. There would have been several military facilities in the Cork city area, so I would have thought that's where they would register the birth.. unless possibly there was a family connection to Limerick ?

Hi Shane
You've helped me in the past to find James and his wife but as of yet I obviously have'nt got any further with finding his regiment or any other relatives in the area around Fermoy.  I'm just digging at all the snippets of information I can and trying to link them if I can.

I was down that end of the country over Easter but did'nt have any time for any research.  I'll keep digging and try to uncover some army records.

Regards
John

Hi John

In 1837 the 27th Regiment was in the Cape Colony. They would have left a depot behind in the UK to carry on recruiting. This was a time when there were very few barracks so the depot would have moved around a lot. They also thought it desirable to keep men moving, so they didn't go soft. In the 1820s when the battalion was home, it moved around such places as Limerick, Buttevant, Fermoy, Dublin and usually moved on within six months. So it is not a surprise if a birth for the 27th Foot was recorded in Limerick.

For the other dates the battalion was in India from 1854 to 1868. At the end of 1860 the depot was in Fermoy.

Thanks Ken

James Galbraith had two children born in Fermoy in 1862 and 1864.  I know he was married to a Mary Jane McConnell but I don't know where or when.  The rest of the children where born in Belfast when they moved north around the late 1860's.
