Garbutt Rosedale 1871 Census Look Up COMPLETED
« on: Monday 26 April 10 15:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone have access to a copy of the actual 1871 Census record for Rosedale please as I would dearly like to know the relationship of the two Ann Garbutts listed to head of household Henry Garbutt and wife Mary.

Unfortunately this (see below) is all I have to go on which doesn't help deciding if the Anns listed were daughters/ grand daughters /servants or something else. Any help would be most appreciated.

Sledge Shoe House, Rosedale West Side, Yorkshire, England
Ironstone Miner. Rosedale West Sledge Shoe House
Henry Garbutt head of household 62 Ironstone PRO
Mary Garbutt 61,
Joseph Garbutt 25,
Ann Garbutt 15,
Ann Garbutt 8,
George Mackinder

Thanks again.

now you dont realise what a tricky question you have asked!

The15 yr old Ann has 'dau' in the relationship to head of house column, but then in the marital staus column, instead of saying single or unm, it says ' gdau'

The 8 yr old has 'gdau' in the relationship column, the marital staus column being blank.

Oh my word would you believe it?
Thanks ever so much for looking this up for me - but now I don't know what to think. Looks like I need some birth certificates.

Thanks again Liz.

I would think that the eldest is a daughter and the youngest a grandaughter - and that the extra 'grandaughter' entry in the wrong column is a mistake ... but I really dont know!

Hi

I could be completely wrong here but worth a thought.

On the IGI there are two christenings

Mary Ann Garbutt - 1854, Helmsley to parent Susanna Garbutt

Ann Wilson Garbutt - 1863, Helmsley to parent Elizabeth Garbutt

On the 1861 Susannah aged 24 is now Rawson with a child Ann Elizabeth Rawson. Mary Ann is down as grand-daughter. (Living with Henry and Mary- if I have the correct family) RG9 Piece 3637 Folio 35 Page 4

Do you think these are the same two girls in 1871?

Thanks to Liz and Evie for helping me out here.  :)

The answer to my question was extremely complex in the end but it's all sorted now. The confusion arose from the Garbutt Abbott habit of using either and both names in official records and inconsistently at that.  One girl was a Garbutt Abbott and the other a plain Garbutt. Confused? That's the Garbutt Abbotts for you.

Thanks to your help I've managed to unravel the connection.
