burial records Belfast
« on: Monday 26 April 10 19:31 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the grave site of my great grandfather James Gallagher who died January 26, 1929 age 75 at 51 Lisbum Road Belfast (urban No 4) which was the Union Workhouse per the 1927 city directory. The certificate says his address was 36 Brougham St. Not sure if he was RC or not. He was widowed. If this is the right man in 1927 he was living in Carrickfergus Antrim. Any help or direction will be appreciated, thanks.

This might be a bit difficult because of the many possibilities- buried in Belfast (either family plot of paupers one through Workhouse), Carrickfergus, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the reply. Would it be possible there might be a record of burials from/at the workhouse?

PRONI have some workhouse records but since it's less than 100 years the information might not be available.

Hello
I would contact both the City Cemetery and Milltown first, for a quick check.  They can check for a burial easily, as long as they have the date of death.  I found my gggrandfathers burial that way. They are very nice and helpful, and will call you back if necessary. Or post or email you also.
You can find their addresses and telephone or email by doing a search on Google.
If your ancestor is not buried in either of these, then you could check the local Carickfergus cemeteries.   Do you know if Brougham St was in Belfast?
Good luck

Going through older posts and came across this one. By now you might have been able to find more information but if you haven't done so the following might be of interest.

Belfast City Council has just launched a searchable database for burial records from some of their cemeteries. Your James Gallagher is listed- buried 29 Jan.1929 City Cemetery Public Ground- died 26 Jan.1929 Union Infirmary.
