Freeman lookup please?
« on: Thursday 29 April 10 20:06 BST (UK) »
Hi!
We've hit a wall on our tree.
We've got to a John Freeman born 1821 in Bexhill. By the time 1841 rolls around he's 20 and no longer with his parents as far as we can see. He married a Maria Taylor in 1852 and died in 1900 (the same day as his only child George.) He appears on the 1861 census with Maria as his spouse, there is also a John Freeman with a Mary listed as their spouse on the 1851 census.

Can anyone help?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

There only appears to be one John Freeman born in Bexhill around the time you mention - although you state bc.1821 the census I looked at (including 1861) indicate 1822/3

In 1851 he is still at home with parents:

1851 - Bexhill, Sussex

John Freeman    65      Ag. Lab.            b. Bexhill, Sussex
Ann Freeman     65                                       ditto
John Freeman    29      Ag. Lab.                     ditto
Alfred Adams   Lodger   16    Ag. Lab.    b. Battle, Sussex
Mary Baker  dau.  marr.   26                  b. Bexhill
William Baker  g/son   5                              ditto
Harriet Baker  g/dau.  2                              ditto
baby Baker     g/son   1 month                   ditto

Ref. HO107-1636-84-18

In 1841 - Bexhill, Sussex

John Freeman      50     Ag. Lab.        Born in County
Ann Freeman       45                               ditto
William Freeman  20                               ditto
John Freeman      15                               ditto
Mary Freeman      15                               ditto
Alfred Adams         5                                ditto

(remember ages were rounded down in 1841 Census - 1851 census would indicate that John Freeman b.1822, Mary Freeman bc.1826)

You state that George was only child but wonder if you mean only son as the census shows he had at least 4 daughters i.e. Harriet bc.1852 Crowhurst, Sarah J. bc.1853, Ann bc.1861 and Emily c.1874 at Bexhill.

A submitted entry on the IGI shows a John Freeman bp.9/5/1784 Bexhill, son of Thomas Freeman and Sarah which could be John senior.

George was the only child we had any record of, the obituary for him and his father didn't mention any siblings, just George's widow and their children.

That's excellent though, I shall pass that onto my aunt whose been doing a lot of the tree. Now its just seeing if we can find the records to dig any further back. :)

Done a lot of hunting today! It looks like if its a Freeman and born in Bexhill they go on the tree somewhere. A lot of it is speculation now because of the dates, but finding Johns siblings helped a lot. Found one of his great uncles had 14 children that we know of.

Whats the earliest record of a Freeman in Bexhill?
