Henry Baldwin born 1812, Cork
« on: Monday 03 May 10 10:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

I don't know whether anyone can help me or point me in the right direction but I am trying to find the baptism for a Henry Baldwin born about 1812 in Cork, Ireland.

His parents should be Corles and Esther.

I have his birth year from a marriage record in Preston, Lancs in 1844 and it may help me to find Corles who was my 4 x great grandfather.

Firstly, very few records exist before the early 1800s. The only early records available online at present for Cork are for the north and east portion of the county on www.irish-roots.ie pay to view site. The church records for the remainder of Cork are due online mid 2010 on www.irishgenealogy.ie

I'm wondering where you have the name Corles from? This is a very unusual name, could it perhaps be Charles? Have you found records for any of Henry's siblings? Did the whole family move to UK? You might be able to confirm that the name is actually Corles if you could find a marriage for a sibling.

The whole story quickly is that my 3 x great grandfather William Henry Baldwin was baptised in St Giles in the Field, London, 1829 to Corles and Esther Baldwin.  I have 1841 census for them and 1851 for Esther and William showing that she was Irish.  Death certificate for Corles 1847, aged 56 years.  I have seen on LDS website a marriage for a Corles Baldwin and Esther Young, Cork 1810.

Corles/Corlis/Corless are various spellings I have seen.

That was where I was at until yesterday when playing around on the LDS records site I found a marriage for a Henry Baldwin born 1812, Ireland to Hannah Darby in Preston, Lancs, his father - Corlis Baldwin.  This can't be a coincidence as it is such an unusual name.

My William appears to be a late baby, Esther was born, according to death cert and census,  in 1786 so would have been about 43 when he was born.  My guess is that they came over from Ireland sometime in the 1820s and as I have found no other children born in this country other children would have been born in Ireland before they left.

The only other reference to Corles I found was the child of Thomas Baldwin, he died aged 3 and lived in the London area also.  Thomas was also born in Ireland and though I have not been able to prove it, I think with a child called Corles, I wonder if he was another child of Corles and Esther born 1815.  Other clue is that Corlis was a shoemaker and Thomas, a bootmaker.  He later emigrated to America.

The only suggestion I can make now is to keep an eye on www.irishgenealogy.ie where the church records for Cork city & suburbs & hopefully West Cork are promised to be on line mid year.
The update link on the website has been removed, as far as I can see, but they had been promised for June/July  :-\

Kerryb  I have found further info on Baldwin.  In the will of JAMES BALDWIN  Kilmony C.Cork dated 1683, he leaves "to my sister Mary CORLIS all my interest in Curryleaghy with remainder to her daughter CATHERINE CORLIS/CORLISS" ETC.  On gedcom I mentioned MARY BALDWIN marries GEORGE CORLISS circa middle 1600s. It seems likely that your Baldwins are mixed in with mine.    Lorc/Lorraine
