Workhouse - LMA?
« on: Thursday 06 May 10 12:52 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

One of my relatives has on his death certificate (in 1886) that he was in the union workhouse in Brentford. Would there be records of his admission in the LMA archives as I can't seem to find anything on their online catalogue?

from the http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ site it seems limited records survive

Hi Mark

Your best bet is to drop the LMA an email and ask if they hold any admission or discharge registers for Brentford Board of Guardians, it looks highly likely though that they don't survive

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/Visitor_information/

They will take a few days to reply.

The catalogue ref is BG/B

Thanks gortonboy and Dawn. It doesn't look promising but I'll ask the LMA.

As an update, the LMA got back to me today and said:

The collection does not include any workhouse admission & discharge registers. It appears that these records have not survived.

Hi Mark

Sorry to see your bad news but it was expected.

As a last resort, you could try Hounslow Local Studies & Archives

http://www.hounslow.info/libraries/HounslowInfoLibrariesLocalStudies.htm

but I don't think it is too promising.
