Cast an experienced eye please
« on: Friday 07 May 10 22:17 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have the birth of a relative Arthur A Gurney listed on Ancestry J F M 1920 in Blean, Surrey Kent.
He seems to be listed twice, once as Arthur A Gurney and once as Arthur A Beecham Gurney, both volumes (2a) and pages (2348) seem to be the same.
I am almost certain that Blean is in Kent and not in Surrey as stated, how can this be so wrong and how can someones birth be listed twice?
Is it possible/ probable that the mothers maiden name was Beecham?
I am utterly confused!
Thanks for any thoughts on this

I think Arthur Gurney has been registered twice under the same reference number.
Once as Arthur A. Gurney, and once as Arthur A. Beecham-Gurney.
In both cases the mother's surname is Gurney.

Blean is in Kent http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/blean.html

Looks like it could be that the father's name was Beecham, and the birth was re-registered with the added name ?

Thanks Nanny Jan, I had that too but it is the Ancestry entry which has me foxed.
I have answered part of my own question as in some places (1911 census for example) Blean is listed Sturry (both of which are near Canterbury) so Sturry has become Surrey on Ancestry.
Jennifer.. where do you think the word Beecham has come from then? I wondered if it was his mothers maiden name as the heading on the top of the page mentions mothers maiden name.
Nick.. perhaps you are right ans she was Ms Gurney and Beecham was the father... I can feel a birth certificate on the horizon!

I think Arthur Gurney has been registered twice under the same reference number.

This must be wrong. If its the same registration number then surely he has only been registered once.

I thought so too but on Ancestry he is listed as Arthur Beecham-Gurney
and Arthur Gurney with the same registration numbers ??

Two registrations would usually mean that mum was known by both names.

Gurney and Beecham-Gurney.....maybe adding the Beecham as it was dad's name but not legally married to him?

Don't take much notice of Ancestry's geography  ::)
I was born in Harrow Middlesex- my birth has been transcribed by Ancestry as taking place in Essex  >:(

This probably isn't uncommon. My great nephew born less than 10 years ago is on twice  - once as Jxxxx  Lxxxx ( the L being his mother's surname) and once as Jxxxx Lxxxxxx-Bxxxxxx the name he was registered with, the B being his father's surname. The registration number is the same.
