Jane Ann Noble - Accused Murderer
« on: Saturday 08 May 10 06:03 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

Have just discovered that my g g grandmother's sister was tried for murder at the Spring Assizes on 26 Apr 1881 at Carlisle for murder.  She was acquitted.

I had found her on the 1881 Census in Her Majesty's Prison, English Street, St Cuthbert Within, Carlisle - she is 22 yrs old and a Farm Servant Domestic, born Brampton, Cumberland.  She was obviously waiting trial.

I am wondering if there is any chance of finding a newspaper report of the trial?

After that she disappears, which doesn't surprise me.

Regards
Janice Lee Wood

If you are a state library client in NSW, you can access the 19thC British Library Newspaper collection:

http://www2.sl.nsw.gov.au/databases/athome.cfm

A quick search for "Jane Ann Noble" shows  a couple of articles, but searching with different terms may reveal more.

Hi Janice

Have been to Carlisle library today but may be back in next week.  If you haven't found anything by the time I go, I'll have a look for you in the local papers stored on microfilm.

Just had a quick look at the National Archives and there is a reference there to Murder - Jane Ann Noble (infantacide).  So it looks like those papers may be available.  I'm not very good at links but this is the it

I am always amazed and very grateful for the prompt replies I get to my posts.

I immediately checked the National Archives and ordered a download of the information.

I couldn't access the State Library although I am a member.  I am building a new house and have packed up most of my things, and, of course, because I had no intention to going to Sydney, my Reader's Ticket is at the bottom of one of the boxes.  Of course, I hear you all say ::)

Dear Julie, if you have time I would love you to have a little search for me - it's sometimes hard to get your hands on records when you live in a little village in rural New South Wales.

But then I seem to be able to rely on help from Roots Chat Members - long may it last.

I also have a theory about Jane Ann Noble [b1858] - her elder sister and only sibling, Mary, my g g grandmother, was born 1838.  I wonder if Jane Ann was her child!  I'm starting to feel very sorry for the girl.

Hi Janice

I have a vague recollection of seeing a similar story to this  somewhere, it may even have been this one, but cant remember where.

Of course I will have a look for you and see if I can find anything in the newspapers. It shouldn't be too difficult as you have a trial date.

Glad the archive link worked

Hi Janice

Just to let you know I have got a copy of the newpaper report about the trial.  I just haven't had time to scan it.  Will do that tomorrow.  Looks like your gg gran was a witness at the trial though.  Its quite a long article, almost 3 columns of a broadsheet newspaper.
