In 1938 my parents bought a new bay windowed house, with inside toilet, upstairs bathroom and brick garage, large gardens to front, side and rear for less than £300.00

From current day experience of men at sea...they quite often have savings, as if they spend a lot of time at sea, they don't have too much time on land to spend it!  Especially if they were on the straight and narrow and didn't gamble or drink!
