Cope or Coke

Good evening
I am wondering if anyone can help solve a problem.  We have a Joseph Cope or Coke in our tree and need to confirm what his surname was.  He was born in Cholsey, Berks in 1736 died 1797.  He married a Mary Diggens on 25th October 1761 in Blewbury, Berks (now in Oxfordshire).

I wasn't sure whether to post this on Berkshire or Oxfordshire!!

If anyone can help solve the surname problem it would be appreciate.

I have his father as Joseph Cope/Coke and mother Joanna Hunt - they married in 1732 Cholsey.  Joseph (1736) had a sibling Elizabeth b 1733.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
According to the register - transcriptions I have (ex OFHS), the surname is recorded as COKE in Cholsey
but as COPE when Joseph married in Blewbury.


This not necessarily helping to solve your dilema.

Do you know where Joseph (the senr) was born/baptised ?

Joseph Cope or Coke (senior) - unfortunately do not have date of birth only his marriage date to Joanna Hunt in 1732 - not much help am I, sorry!

Joseph Cope (or Coke) who married Mary Diggens had loads of children one of whom was John Cope (or Coke) who was born in 1776, christened 31 March 1776 Cholsey, died 1842 Winterbrook but buried 30 April 1842 Cholsey.  He married Lucy Geary 1798 in Cholsey.

Not sure if any of this helps with the Cope or Coke surname dilemma.
