Marriage HAGGAR & PALMER 1850s look up please
« on: Saturday 26 March 05 19:01 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help in establishing the marriage in the 1850s,between Henry Haggar (b in Hitchin) and Louisa Palmer(b Grt Bowden). I sent for the certs of two Henrys but they were not to L Palmer. All my searches on the web produce no Louisa Palmer. I have the birth certs of the son William so I know the parents were Henry and Louisa.
Can anyone help
Thanks
Alf

Welcome Alf :)

If you have searched the complete GRO Indexes without success, then it would appear that for some reason this marriage is not recorded or perhaps never actually took place.  It is rarer for marriages to be missed off of the index than births, but sadly it does happen.

I have checked the BVRI without success I'm afraid.  Perhaps it might be a good idea to contact HALS, because although the Allen Index only officially records Herts Marriages up to 1837, work is underway to extend this to 1855.

Thanks Rick
I received this the other day.
1871 census
Rg10/1478 folio 56 page 41
Onford St. Hardingstone, Northampton

Henry Haggar wid. age 46 Police Constable(??/Railway)
born Hertfordshire Hitchin
Henry son age 17 engine cleaner b Herts.St.Albans
Janet dau age 15 b care of house b Leics Grt Bowden
Emma dau age12 b ditto
Louisa dau age 10 b ditto
William son age 3 b ???Cotton

Death
Louisa HAGGER age 45
Sept. ¼ 1870 Hardingstone 3b 27

I will apply for the Death cert but that will not show the marriage just the birth which I know was Grt Bowden. The ??? Cotten is infact Far Cotten

The IGI marriage search gives Henry Haggar and Louisa ------ and it reads as though it took place in Grt Bowden but I applied there and it was not found.
It is a mystery to me.

Alf

I note that the IGI marriage is a "member submitted" entry and is not from Parish Records.  I am always very vary of these, as they quite often turn out to be wrong!  As the eldest child from the 71 entry was born in Herts, I think you are right to suspect that they may have been married there.

The Allen Index is collated from Parish Records and not Civil Registration records, so you could get lucky.

Hi Casalguidi

I certainly have and we have drawn a blank at this stage. So  I am trying this chat route that is encouraging as far as getting an interest goes.

Not quite what you are looking for  but a step in the right direction perhaps?  Looking at this, the family may have have been in St Albans, Herts at the time of 1851 census so perhaps that could be your next avenue to explore  ???

Best wishes

Hello Alf

The family seem to be living apart in 1851.  Henry is also listed as single ???  This could be a mistake on the part on the enumerator, or indeed Henry could have fibbed to his employers about being a married man, but it could indicate that they were not in fact legally married, or perhaps married much later that you anticipated.

1851 Census.  HO107/1713 Folios 232a&b
St Peters Street
St Peters
St Albans

HAGGAR

Louisa, Head, Mar, 25, Wife, b Kimpton, Herts
Alfred, Son, 2, b St Albans
Henry, lodger, 2months, b St Albans

HO107/1713 Folio 500a
Childwickbury

HAGGAR Henry, Servant, Unm, 27, House Servant, b Hitchin, Herts
