west derby liverpool
« on: Wednesday 12 May 10 11:37 BST (UK) »
Hi
could some one tell me if  welsh was the main language in this area during 1880--1930
i have a relative who was a welsh speaker from the area and her family hardly ever spoke english - older family members thought she and her family came from prestatyn but my records put the family [ pritchard ] in this area for nearly 50 years unfortunatly she passed away without leaving any records or photos
many thanks

West Derby was and is a parish and village, but now part of Liverpool.  It was also a widespread registration district, covering outer parts of the present Liverpool city area, and bits of the adjoining parts of Lancashire.
There were many Welsh speakers in Liverpool, and probably nearby, even Welsh-speaking churches and chapels.
Much of Liverpool's Victorian housing was put up by builders from Wales.

Hope this helps.
A

The only connection I have with West Derby is that some of my German ancestors lived there (not sure when they arrived exactly, but they're there on the 1881 census) I've been talking to someone else who has German ancestors who also lived there & she said a lot of Germans settled in that area....a German church was founded there & a sugar factory employed a lot of German immigrants. I'm probably talking about the registration area rather than the village (haven't had time to look into it).....so it seems to have been an area that took in a lot of incomers

Welsh was certainly not the main language spoken in West Derby in that period or as far as I know in any period.  A large proportion of the inhabitants around that time had some Irish ancestry and as far as I know none of our ancestors from the area spoke Welsh.

When referring to ‘West Derby’ you need to understand that it very much depends upon the context as it can mean the West Derby Hundred, West Derby Union, West Derby registration district, West Derby townships (both urban and rural) or West Derby village - and there may be more. This comes from meaning the western lands of the Lords Derby.

Most people come across it in terms of BMD certificates, ie the registration district:

The separate shaded area to the south of Liverpool town centre is Toxteth Park, which became a separate registration district in 1881.

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/west%20derby.html in list form.

When looking for an event on something like FreeBMD you need to check West Derby and Toxteth Park, as well as Liverpool.

Okay....Garston, (where I live) had a Copper works built in 1878 ish
Garston had a Copper Works but not many locals knew anything about Copper....BUT THE WELSH DID...
So Hundreds of Welsh Copper workers were brought to Garston ...and a few streets are named after Welsh names...Meredith St , Hughes St etc etc
Pritchard is a very prominent name here in Garston....loads of them...Garston comes under the West Derby reg area, so maybe we are tallkng about the Garston Welsh here ....a massive amount of Welsh names here..so what happened in about 1890 was that they all went on strike....they all lived in 2 up and 2 down terraced houses owned by the Copper Works....the Copper Works SACKED every Welsh Worker there and Evicted them out of their houses...they then brought in a huge amount of complete families from Ludlow and housed them and gave them a job as they also knew about Copper....these people were nicknamed the Ludlow Scabs..........and to this day 120 yrs later they are still referred to as ..."his ancestors were one of the Ludlow Scabs"....very close knit community in Garston....they never forget...
So in a nutshell, to answer your Query Keejay....YES here in Garston , which is within the West Derby register area, there were many Welsh in the late 1800`s....and probably spoke Welsh ....allan ;)
