Emma Beecher
« on: Saturday 26 March 05 20:23 GMT (UK) »
Can some kind person look for a family with a daughter called Emma Beecher in the 1841 please? She  married  Richard Parrett in 1845, so I guess her birth would be around 1820 ish

I believe that she had ancestors in common with those of Harriet Beecher Stowe - does anyone know if there is anything about this line already researched ?

These is a reasonable chance that this is your emma in the 1871.
Should narrow the area down a bit.

Agnes Parrett 12  Benenden, Kent, England Daughter
Amy Parrett 18  Benenden, Kent, England Daughter
Ellen Parrett 20  Cranbrook, Kent, England Daughter
Emma Parrett 51  Cranbrook, KentEngland Wife
Mary A Parrett 15  Benenden, Kent, England Daughter
Richard Parrett 49  Cranbrook, Kent, England Head
Richard Parrett 13  Benenden, Kent, England Son

RG10/950   Cranbrook  Folio   42

Pauline

You could also use www.1837online.com/www.familysearch.org  to confirm these birth details from the 1861/1881 censuses.

Thanks Pauline, I have her marriage registration details, I just wondered if anyone had the 1841 as she didn't get married until 1845. No doubt I'll end up ordering the marriage certificate !

Her daughter, Fanny (not on the list, I think she was married by 1871) married Algernon de Blanquiere Joy (what a name !) and that connects her to my mother in law.

BTW if anyone knows why a family with perfectly ordinary names should have the 'Algernon de Blanquiere' flight of fancy please let me know  ::)

The pointy about narrowing down the area is that there is next to no indexing on anything prior to 1861.

1851 has been (partly) done on a piece basis (5,000 names at a time), for selected towns
I'm not aware of ANY indexes for 1841 Kent.

Oh thanks - as you can tell this is all new to me !  :-[ So does that mean I'm looking for Parish records now ? Where next (or after I have the marriage certificate) ?

The relevant Beecher left for the USA in the late 1500's I think, so it might be quite a marathon to get back that far !! :o

A marriage certificate post 1837, should contain:

Bride & Groom's :
name (including maiden name for a widow re-marrying)
age( sometimes just "Full age"),
address (Often "Of this Parish"),
marital status (single/ widower) ,
father's name, father's occupation.

Prior to 1837 you are looking at parish records for everything.
Marriages will just be bride & groom's name (of given town )
Baptisms will be Child of "John Smith & Mary" (no maiden name given for mother)

Collect as much background evidence as you can before you get to parish records.
The 1841 census will not record where a person was born, only in/out of county.

Fun, eh?

So when I get this marriage certificate I should get the address, was the convention still to marry in the brides parish ? Am I going to have to guess where her mother came from ? Blimey ! (Why isn't there a little smiley for 'help !' ??? )

Hi

I don't know if you have made any progress with this request as yest but as both Richard, Emma and their elder children were supposedly born in Cranbrook, there is a good chance that the marriage took place there.

There is a look up offer for Cranbrook marriages on the Kent Lookup Exchange.  I'm not sure if this is index only or a full transcript but should be worth investigating:

Best wishes
